Michael Cohen has an interesting theory, in discussion on Tuesday with Rachel Maddow: get a lackey in the justice department to indict him and then pardon himself, or resign and let Pence do it!

“You say at the very end of the book that the president and Attorney General William Barr ousted the U.S. Attorney of New York and tried to install, effectively, the president’s golfing buddy as the new U.S. Attorney there because the president, in your view, wanted to arrange for himself to be indicted while he’s still in office because that would give him the opportunity to pardon himself after he lost the election,” she said.

“Well, my theory is that if he loses, there’s still the time between the election and the time that the next president would take office,” Cohen elaborated. “And during that time, my suspicion is that he will resign as president, he will allow Mike Pence to take over, and he will then go ahead and have Mike Pence pardon him.”

“And it’s a very, let’s just say it’s a very Nixon-type of event and it was probably discussed between Roger Stone and President Trump at some point,” he continued. “That this is certainly one way to avoid any potential prison time.”

Where are Pence's loyalties? Is he with Trump, ultimately? Or is he reluctant?

That is, could Trump trust Pence to bail him out like that, or would coercion be necessary?

Can see martial law being enacted. Too many militias strutting round open carrying, too much collusion between law enforcement and said groups. Ugly outcomes all round.

If Trump wins it’ll kick off and he loses it’ll kick off. Peace? Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

because if biden wins, trump can be indicted once he is no longer president. not sure Cohen has his timing right, though...can you pardon someone who has only been indicted? don't they have be convicted first?

it's not clear who Pence's constituency is at this point. evangelicals alone aren't enough to carry him if he runs for president at some point, and not sure all the MAGA crowd would stuck with him. they certainly wouldn't support him if he betrayed trump.

idk how serious this or Civil War II comments in general are

but taking it seriously as a thought experiment, one has to ask how such a thing would proceed

the actual Civil War had a very clear geographical split and a single (more or less) wedge issue. the standing military at its outbreak was very small.

none of that is true today

for all the coasts v interior blue and red are still patchworked in many places, there's no single organizing issue like slavery

the military now is enormous and technologically advanced and would have to be involved, which its show no inclination to do (that I know of)

now if you're talking about increased domestic terrorism in the Oklahoma City tradition, that sounds plausible

more Kyle Rittenhouses, but with foresight and coordination (and possible law enforcement collusion) i.e. death squads, sure

I suppose you could envisage it at a very low level, armed skirmishes, street battles, small scale terrorism.
