The permanently canonised are usually worthy though in my experience

Watched a bit of yojimbo the other day e.g. and it absolutely shat on inception

Seven Samurai's brilliant. I went in expecting a bit of a slog due to the length, but it flew by. Same with 2001 the first time I watched it.

sad to live the kind of partial life required to not appreciate Punch-drunk Love, or Phantom Thread, or Mulholland Drive

It's interesting isn't it. I quite enjoy the unreconstructed stupidity of Lynch because I'm not a snob but I can see why Craner recoils from it. He's the definition of basic. Gays and midgets are sinister and token Chinese birds get turned into teapots. It's moronic. But at the same time, it's quite fun. Freud for the slow readers class

Punch Drunk Love stuck with me, but a fellow kid in one of my classes pointed out that all Sandler needed to do was deviate from his usual performance and he would be lauded. A bit overstated, but not by much. Not to dismiss his performances in Punch Drunk Love or in Uncut Gems, both of which I respected - but there is some truth to that, no?

Also PTA is from, and sets some of his films in, the San Fernando Valley, porn capital of the states, where I was born and raised.

And to the point about Lynch being basic: I haven't seen enough of his films to really confirm or deny, but isn't there value to creating non-vapid work that appeals to the mainstream? Opens up a market, even if the style is taken up by vapid works, but it also warms up people's appetites for film in ways that most mainstream films don't.

I dunno if simple is quite the word for Lynch. Maybe primitive or raw or something, it's like he thinks something and then he just does it. There isn't a lot of modification between thought and screen. I don't thibk that's a bad thing.

Is Craner an expert in Freudianism?

Sure but his dramatic performance is a small part of that film. The lighting and lens flares, the music and cinematography, the recurring metaphors of glass and fragility, the strange character motifs, the Western gunfights staged over telephone wires, the get-rich-quick schemes, the relentless harpy sisters and the succession of intimate women pounding on Sandler's door.

Yeah I was struck by how much of an impact those little abstract interludes made. You're right about his performance being just a part.
