Neither really. Makes no difference. I won't listen to it I'll just pontificate.

what will the pontification be based on?

I sometimes find myself having opinions about films I haven't seen, books I haven't read, albums I haven't heard, based solely on reviews, chatter, the zeitgeist. it's hilarious, to write off (or have any option) an artist without engaging, just based on the milieu.

I've listened to a few albums by him and I can't remember anything off the top of my head. But that's not the point of this music I suppose. There's no choons.

R Plus Seven was his best one. I think it's musically satisfying - definitely more so than it's interesting to talk about. The schizo-aesthetic crystalline digital majestic artificiality bla bla bla get's boring quickly.

The melodies are very fresh and the internet hyper fragmented sound is actually done well.

I heard a couple of things. It's all a bit too much for me. Loads of squiggly noises. Bit stressful isn't it.

this REALLY struck me when i first saw it, still does really:

iirc there was a huge reaction on /mu/ at the time. naturally some people were unimpressed, pointing out that it was just some art world hipsters recycling "shocking" content that had already been out there for years (with added pretension). but for the vast majority of the kids (including me), something about the way all this imagery was put together and framed with the audio and narration was deeply unsettling. on some level it was resonant. it made you never want to use a computer or the internet again. i've thought about it semi-regularly since then.

"As you look at the screen, it is possible to believe you are gazing into eternity."

"You can still see every detail clearly, but can’t grasp the meaning."

Everyone knows he did this, right?

Yeah. That's a very great achievement p. That made a big impression in me at the time. Nothing else could really repeT the trick for some reason. That perfected it and so made it redundant

yeah loads of sounds cut and pasted but sorta monophonically so I don't get noise, I get fluttery unsettled arcs of melody

I liked the stuff he was saying around that time about vertically and horiztonally dense music and treating music like an object in space,
R Plus Seven sounds very rigorously composed—more so than your early work, which felt quite improvisatory. Did you take a very different approach with this record?
I've made vertically dense music in the past, and I more or less decided to do a record where I would flip that axis over this way [horizontally] and just excavate. So now I have a plane—a horizontal plane with very particular musical objects, in almost like a tableaux format. The objects themselves are very simple, but what they are doing, for me anyway, has an opportunity to be very complex. Also, that created more interesting opportunities for rhythm and micro-placement of things, and working with MIDI a lot.
There’s a teasing quality to the album as well.
Yeah, in a way. Like if there’s a sculpture in a space, you can walk around it and certain perspectives will only allow you to experience so much of it. But there could be shadows or light or dealing with a particular obfuscated bit of a sculpture from one angle you want to explore from the other side. The things I find interesting about experiencing an object in space, I wanted to feel compositionally.

Obscuring certain things deliberately, or hiding them...
Or showing them in different perspectives. Simple, gestural things about acute moments that make them feel like an object instead of a musical convention.

Garden of Delete I remember as pretty unsatisfying though, I'm probably mostly talking about R Plus Seven and the sample one

I got the leak of Garden of Delete about a month before it was released and played it nonstop for more or less the whole month then never went back to it. Sounded like some of the most inventive music I'd ever heard tbh. So many ideas crammed into each tune.

The Nobody Here thing is cool, and I get that the thing is to make quite a lot with so little... but I think if it just had a little bit less little (ie more) then it could be something better.

I sensed a change of temperement with that one. Was no longer the Tangerine Dream wide eyed inquisitative world building but more of a production show.

Speaking of TD, I recall part of the Good Time score sounding almost identical to something on Rubycon

This was a cool vid. Goes well with the music. You can see what he was saying about objects around that time. The still life thing with the Terminator skull etc whilst the music's made of all these pristine presets.

Someone said something similar to me about Age Of. That it felt more like a showcase, a pitch for commissions and soundtrack work, than an album.

Yeah that's a cool video. I think he's genuienly fascinated by the unlocked possibilities of that style instead of getting bogged down in Baudrillian theory or something.
