Thank you - quite a bit needs to be fleshed out.

The tetrad is interesting. Might take a while to digest it, however. Not sure, precisely, what would constitute a novel medium. I suppose podcast would be the next stage/return of radio?

“Man becomes, as it were, the sex organs of the machine world, as the bee of the plant world, enabling it to fecundate and to evolve ever new forms. The machine world reciprocates man’s love by expediting his wishes and desires, namely, in providing him with wealth

I think the charisma idea relates to this.

Douglas Cater in The Fourth Branch of Government tells how the men of the Washington press bureaus delighted to complete or fill in the blank of Calvin Coolidge's personality. Because he was so like a mere cartoon, they felt the urge to complete his image for him and his public. It is instructive that the press applied the word "cool" to Cal. In the very sense of a cool medium, Calvin Coolidge was so lacking in any articulation of data in his public image that there was only one word for him. He was real cool. In the hot 1920s, the hot press medium found Cal very cool and rejoiced in his lack of image, since it compelled the participation of the press in filling in an image of him for the public

I've decided this guy's gotta be a wanker

Everything he says seems exaggerated for effect

Generally his quotes seem more geared for sensationalism than accuracy

I liked the quote on first read-through; it’s sure poetic and resonates with a lot of the anthropomorphic tendencies of sci-fi. But is there anything humans make or manufacture (which is to say, is there anything they find useful) which you could not say this of? Brooms, omelette, forum posts, one-liners. Machines are just a subset of tools, really—and everything is a tool if you look at it right. So why pick on machines, other than to play to the crowd?

maybe. this could be a form of object oriented ontology

but with media, communication networks especially, their effects are much more pronounced and transformative. seeing them as extensions of our nervous system is a useful metaphor for understanding these complex effects isn't it?

and this idea is difficult to refute in the social media age. the arguments made in richard seymour's twittering machine. we are users but we are the product and the content too, moulding ourselves.

the 'extensions' is imprtant because we can fall into thinking the machine has will distinct of ours. the internet is done by people while our brains being internetted, feeback, like a nervous system

Dissensus actually embodies this in some sense, you can get at it, in that the feedback you get can push and pull you in varying directions. If you picture yourself as the central pillar on the kabbalistic tree of life and receiving tugs and shoves from its various nodes, and those nodes taking the form of specific comments and reactions

If I make a severe statement and shiels encourages me then Sheils is at that specific node of severity pulling me in that direction.

There's something within us learning from these affirmations and rewards and scolding and so on.

What cancellation means is ejection from the entire training chamber or school

when I was in the Pink Temple they told me the in-breath is will the out-breath is surrender. That's the most useful thing I've ever been taught.

Expulsion from the Invisible College itself even.

This is where I think my conception of the invisible college differs from psychedelic fascism. Josef k is a psychedelic fascist, my sense of how it operates is about these systems of feedback. This is what I get instructed I when I go to the pink temple so that is what I believe.

The wizard of earthsea is good at modelling this stuff. The common mistakes made by a promising student and the consequences of those mistakes. Etc etc etc

the other thing would be that extending a sense in this sense incurs a reciprocal sensory debt; the decline of an oral culture in the wake of the printed word, not being able to remember your address because of too much google maps etc. an omelette does not demand the same pound of collective psychic flesh i suppose

Yes there is a kind of ratio. This is where it shades into Mcluhan's conspiratorial side as those ratios come to be seen as engineered for nefarious purposes of control
