Trump... my honest assessment is that he has ground down countless litigants, debtors and so on by simply tying them up in meritless court cases until they ran out of money. At this stage it appears that he was dumb enough to think that he could do the same to the USA, that if he created enough spurious court cases then suddenly they would throw up their hands and say "Alright Don, you can stay president" and that was his strategy... maybe with some vague idea that the Supreme Court would sweep in and make him president. But... this was a fantasy.9

Pennsylvania now certified... so I guess we should start to see more and more Repub Senators admitting it's over... slowly at first and then all at once.
(it's a good expression that, I use it a lot now).

I want people here to be more controversial than they are, there are these whiffs of feeling and then people are very reasonable when you push them on it, it's all smoke and mirrors, the unreasonableness

It's all the air of a Pynchon novel and then you ask and they're like, "Oh well I mean it's not a conspiracy, per se, there's just a decentralized system of preferences"—OK, I agree, but you're making me look bad!

@padraig (u.s.) and others—we had a bet. Was there any violence? Any real roadbumps beyond Trump's usual bluster? I can wait til January to collect, I'm a patient guy
if you'll recall I didn't take yr odds bc they were too high

yr 3 things were U.S. military doesn't get involved, >100 total deaths, Biden takes oath on scheduled date

to which I said

the first two, yes

the last is probably still yes but I'm less confident of it, tho not enough to take odds

candidates have always been unwilling to drag things out past a certain point

but Trump has neither shame nor any sense of responsibility so he can see him trying to do that

he and his people previously made noise about trying to delay the election

it still probably comes off without a hitch but I think there's a reasonable chance of some kind of nonsense

and

there are many levels of chaos short of "secession and civil war"

domestic terrorism, violent streetfighting, etc seem like reasonable possibilities

not guaranteed or anything but greater than a >1% chance

I think my predictions were solid. there was violent streetfighting, at the Million MAGA march at least, possibly elsewhere idk about.

no domestic terrorism I'm aware of yet, but it still seems like a reasonable possibility

Trump + his ppl did indeed drag things out far past a reasonable point, and there has been plenty of nonsense

in a range of possible post-election outcomes this has been relatively tame but I think it's also wrong to dismiss this as "his usual bluster"

as I also said somewhere in this thread, I wasn't never really concerned about a coup - lack of guts and guns

I was worried about the warping of the American democratic process beyond repair, and the last 3 weeks have proved that a valid fear, just in case the last 4 years somehow didn't

no one has ever made such a concerted, deliberate attempt to discredit the electoral process itself in the face of all evidence

the Democrats certainly questioned the validity of the election ex post facto in 2016 but they didn't drag out the election itself. Hillary conceded the next day.

lots of ppl did say that there would be a violent coup attempt if trump lost, however
the first several pages of this very thread is me slapping down predictions of civil war etc as totally unrealistic

I mean what else do you want I can't control every stupid thing everyone says everywhere, no one can

I don't have as much editorial control over European opinions about American domestic politics. believe me I wish I had more.

Ah yes, I do remember a discussion of betting odds that was quietly dropped cos the person making the book admitted they didn't understand how odds work.

Also I am glad there hasn’t been huge amounts of violence from Trump supporters, but I think the likelihood of it happening was larger than I would have predicted a year ago.

And I do think there will be a fair amount of unrest from assorted militia types, proud boys, Qanon nerds etc in 2021.
