The secret of time travel is that time aligns vertically, not horizontally - Sun Ra knew that, Philip K. Dick knew that, and I fucking know it - so you've got to stop worrying about moving back or forward and learn to punch through up and down.

I've always wondered how much influence Goldie's actually had over the music under his name. Doesn't he essentially just tell producers and engineers how he wants it to sound then they make it for him?

Other thing is his idea of developing drum 'n' bass seems to amount to making the tunes really long and trying to turn it into classical music.

The Seancic Method is where you use other people to vicariously raise the spirits - the deities even - that you want within the music. I'm not the first one to do it, either. Duke Ellington's not playing the trumpet solos himself, is he? Phil Spector's not banging the kettle drums. Captain Beefheart's not got a guitar in his hand - he's locking his band up in a house and teaching them Trout Mask Replica by hypnosis.

What I do is the same thing...

another gem from Goldie's autobiography All Things Remembered

Story goes that Rob Playford is the one who knew his way around the studio and actually made Timeless. Goldie was verbally directing and with his graf background using diagrams to plot out how he visualised the tunes

He was driven. Larger than life. That's what's needed to bring something like jungle to the forefront. Big characters, something for the public to grab on to

Now obviously third or luke would say its because its shit, but one of the things the movers and shakers of brokenbeat put the lack of breakthrough and footholds gained down to is lack of a Goldie type

That The Face cover alone was huge

"I eq'd Terminator on about 5 e's. I was stood on the desk holding the roof like..."

"People were like what the fuck is that?! It was bending people's prisms open"

Can only imagine what it felt like to be hearing shit like Terminator for the first time

There's a great vid of Goldie talking about making 'Terminator' where he says Mark Rutherford was so fucked he lost his vision and had to have his mouse hand moved around for him whilst shouting out instructions.

What's with the Scottish narrator? Sounds like Andrew Neil reading Edgar Allan Poe or something.

Grime obviously had Wiley, but I can't think of a figure like that for garage or dubstep.

I really like that idea of a techy guy sat at the computer and interpreting the directions of a visionary.

Also cos the people who make brilliantly engineered, sophisticated electronic music tend to be techy nerd types - who *do* make great music sometimes but it's just interesting to have a non-nerd being given a conduit to the electronic arts.

Haha you have to see Pump Up The Volume if you haven't already. The bit where Sean Ryder tells the story of seeing Kate Bush in person for the first time is gold.
Have you seen old Bukem doc with his nutty manager, Tony Fordham?

Two opposing forces forging gold. We had a thread about that phenomenon didn't we?

Same, at the same time I guess he's got the ruffige cru stuff to show what he's capable of on his own? But hat quote from his book about Duke Ellington and Captain Beefheart (lol) being great conductors and using other talented people as conduits is pretty on point. Third was saying the same thing about coked up Miles Davis bringing the best outta his cast. Reminds me on the NBA and certain players they call floor raisers, they turn middling teams into contenders and contenders into champions.
