one of my mates has got a pot belly and i'm going that way.

in the first lockdown i was doing a bit of jogging in the mornings, but it's been too bleak here for that. i reckon i might start in next few weeks. i'm getting that spring energy.

the challenge is there's no deadline for this stuff. I've had this rowing machine for years and periodically said to myself "ok, I've got to use this"...but then I'd always say I'll start tomorrow, or after this weekend, or when this busy work project ends, or when we get back from vacation, or...and then it never happen.

I've ballooned right out. I've gone from a Medium/Small to a Large, easily put four inches on my waistline but seemingly nowhere else. I didn't expect us to be in lockdown for so long, or multiple times, or to be made redundant and stuck at home watching how much I spend. If I had I would have made a proper effort to do Youtube workouts and so on. I had a fortnight there where I was doing a dance workout every morning but it gets really boring really quickly doesn't it? My goal for after lockdown is to only socialise with people bigger than me so I look small by comparison.

Before lockdown I couldn't and wouldn't cook much. I lived off ready meals, pasta and pizza, takeaways and tins. There are loads of reasons for why I had developed such an unsophisticated palette, mostly that I didn't want to make the time to cook properly and lose it from elsewhere in my life, and also just general fear of failure, "this isn't for me" nonsense. But I figured at the start of lockdown that if I was going to be in the house looking for ways to kill time and I was going to be Boredom Eating then I might as well embrace learning some stuff about food. The problem is that all my recipe books I've accumulated are designed for hearty meals and group situations, a meal for four in a book easily becomes a meal for two with a plate of leftovers when you're serving it.

Yeah it definitely gets boring. There's no Joe wicks or yoga with adtienne in lockdown 3.

Cooking for 1 is always a bit of a pain, i can never be arsed to go to the trouble if it's just me, and i don't wanna be eating the same thing more than 2 days in a row cos it emphasises my alone routine.

I have just made my own breakfast (2 slices of bacon, fried bread and egg, tomatoes, onions, chilli, ketchup) but that's different.

Those kenji videos might do it for you but you could go the way I've gone with them where you are watching them knowing that you are highly unlikely to actually do any of the cooking.

Def needs documenting.

Neighbor Masashi Ohtsu has been doing the street beat here ,
and honed in during COVID ( approx. from last March to recently ) -
he caught the aftermath of yesterday's hail storm by Union Square.
Never saw such ... ice come down.

something else i've been wondering about is this issue of why younger people are getting bad side effects off the vaccine, whereas older people generally seem to have none.

the conclusion i've come to in my own head, without reading any proper literature on the topic is as follows:

the younger people have stronger immune systems.
so their white blood cells come out in force to attack the virus intrusion.

which allows the virus to take hold a bit and then battle commences.
which expresses as all the bad side effects.

in contrast, older people have less of an immune system.
so the intrusion of the virus is not combatted by the body.
the virus is in such a small amount that it soon dissipates and dies, as it has no fight to have.

but maybe i'm not right there at all.

Are there any "Covid artists" in the same way that there were war artists?

I was in the vaccine centre (large evangelical church building) and I wanted to get my pad out and start drawing.

Just the looks, the furniture, the littled chats, everything. Needs documenting.
also the warning and info posters that are everywhere, esp on public transport, but also anywhere that passive aggressive mentality is exercised (ie every corner of the UK) - some are beginning to look dog-eared and shabby like a badly imagined post-apocalypse sci-fi movie set

seems like those notices are generally sacrosanct from satirical graffito though - noone dares to comment about the alarming lack of eyebrows on the wear a mask icon on the tube

I believe that's broadly true, recall reading something about how immune systems react differently according to age.

the colour palette is something worth considering. on the roads, we see orange on black eg

or black on orange

i'd like to know the rationales for those colour choices.

that's prety simple, afaik intense black/yellow naturally makes you alert, ie. wasps, bees, poisonous frogs, so on
vibrant colours are shouting "don't eat me unless you want trouble"

the weird thing for me is that those colour combos are usually used to report accidents or closed roads, and have now been repurposed for covid signs. I'm not saying they are necessarily doing something sly, but...

It's not over yet, but it's kind of over for now.

Not sure if this resonates with anyone else because it might be specific to me (and people of my age?) but at this stage I do feel like COVID has been a sort of big full stop on a chapter of my life.

I was already tending towards staying in, not going out to clubs or pubs etc. My friends were having kids and settling down. But there were some glimmers of possibility left. Then COVID came along and slammed the door down.

I feel really sorry for kids whose golden years have been fucked up by this. (OTOH they're not old and bitter like me, so fuck em)
