Dissensus Raw: The Compilation - A Thread

Really good stuff all. Keep trying to start more writeups but got the block. Anyone else ever get that when there's a sense of duty as opposed to just knocking it out off the cuff? Need to work on my own track now, so will try to get around to it after some headway's been made there. If anyone else feels like having a go, feel free :alien:

As the pieces come in ...
In the spirit of 'bringing them all back home' to Dissensus :

In one way, this collection / compilation is an unusual creature already ...
I have never seen so many pieces by people who just may not make music
ever or very often, and who may never have gotten a piece onto something
( public listening, radio, Bandcamp , etc. )
In the sense that, yep, now you are going to be right there, judged, loved or dismissed as the listeners go through the selections ...
A couple little points prolly worth making now as ppl are ' in process' ...

* Any pieces that have been posted, i would urge the makers to listen to them
with an eye on ' where does it become the same loops/ same parts playing over again ? '
Just to say, you know how it is - you start to listen to a piece, it goes through it's initial parts - a sound intro possibly, beats, maybe some music on top - then repeats exactly the same thing for the second half of total playing time.
Certainly, ' tracks ' ( as opposed to say' songs' ) are these kinds of beasts - they can just stalk on into time.
But even some of those do often add new sounds, little details in the drums, the production itself ...
My point is - just listen to those later parts and see if they are needed, add something to the whole ( progressing possibly, not essential but ... ) or do they just repeat.
I mean hey, this is your chance to soar, more.
The barriers are nil, so it is easy to get on this collection !

Upshot. When one looks back and listens one year later, would like it if everyone is still into what they did and not thinking " Aaah, if i had edited that part , hmm this part could have ... "

and 2. The pieces are supposed to all get 'Mastered' , that final process that helps make things ' sound releaseable ' or in the realm of such.
So just to make the note that pieces do not have to bricked out to TOP LEVEL AT ALL TIMES, the mastering process will 'make all sound good together',
some pieces may need a level up here or there, others already at top volume
not so much can be done in that Mastering process.

From what i have heard , and i am just here to help , is there could be a few more of the rough and tumble mutant club / dance tracks which may make up some good amount of the total !
'Normal' music, club tracks have already been done fer ages, and ages
let's go further : )

- there can be some comparison to these later stage audio process'
to what happens in writing - it is ( can be ) in the editing, the rewrites that can make things hum.
That opening line , say ...
First page ...
A single word - a single beat can change complexion of a track ..

I do come to see each as microcosm or macrocosm,
so whittle and par or conversely, optimise and maximize,
something like that is par for the course here : )

I feel the push of time passing here for sure , got too many things going before heading out to do more in LA by 24th.
Also without a multi track set up , had to set time at friend's in order to output the piece i programmed and to finish the stray piece we had lying dormant, looking for it's moment.

@yyaldrin would be nice to have something from you, as you are the most frequent poster in Dissensus Raw Productions-thread afterall. Give us a rough track what @polystyle suggested! (or something else if you don't feel doing roughness right now)

Working on it! when is the deadline?

We said end of the month, but there's a full moon on the 26th, so it would be perfect if everyone had theirs done by the 23rd or earlier so we could maybe get them mastered and put on Bandcamp and do a release thing on the 26th. Which means 12 days to go!

What does everyone think?

Also, @polystyle has mentioned it, but what do we think about mastering? I've never had anything mastered so I don't know the logistics. Assuming it will cost something, but no idea how much.

@soul_pill what do you think? How long does it usually take? and what does it cost?

Would be great to have as many people weigh in on this, especially those who've released something before and know the deal

Mastering (especially if there's more tracks than in single/EP) can take longer than few days, so 23rd might be too late to submit the tracks if we want this to be out on 26th.

Can't second this enough. The context of this is big picture. There's no time for half-stepping. It's time to come correct, no hesitation. You feel like your piece is too long or repetitive? Stick a B section in there for a quick palette cleanser and then bang it back into A with the fortitude. Have a beer or whatever it takes to get loose and come at it like you mean it. You'll be glad you did and the board will be proud. Not trying to be all Liam Gallagher here, but this shit could be biblical.

Maybe we could have the final revealing of the tracks with a listening party on the 26th and then take it from there? Best not to rush. Still waiting to hear from a few people how they're getting on.
