one thing i noticed in hollywood movies is that whenever there's a phone call going on neither of the people involved says bye or goodbye or something like that, they just hang up. isn't that strange?

If Leo were as rude as that on phone while at home, his wife would whack him over the head with a rolled-up copy of Country Life magazine.

I notice that, but let's be fair, it's not just Hollywood, it's anything with a phone call in it. It always jumps out at me because - as anyone who knows me will confirm - I am scrupulously polite and I find it incredibly rude. Also it's unrealistic cos the way they do it it seems as though everyone has psychically understood that the call is over at the same time - I find this particularly stupid in gritty, raw thrillers and obviously someone has decided that their film is too raw and gritty for pleasantries of any kind, phone calls should be terse, taut exchanges of information with not a single word wasted.... but people can't and don't communicate that way and so it has the opposite result to that intended. Probably everyone watching is momentarily thinking "why no goodbye?".

Another American film/TV thing:

One character is on the phone to another, and says "Turn on the TV." And of course the TV is already on a news channel, and there's a story on right now, at the very start of the segment, covering an event of interest to those characters.

DAN

STAN

Shut up Dan and turn on the TV

Dan goes and buys a TV and takes it home and connects it to the set top box and turns it on.

DAN

OK Stan the TV is on.

STAN

I told you this would be all over the news

DAN

What would? I'm watching Ready Steady Cook

STAN

Turn on the news you idiot.

Dan goes on the menu and scrolls through 100 channels.

DAN

I'm not sure I've bought the news package. I'll call you back when the news is on.

STAN

OK, Dan. Nice talking to you. I hope you're well. So long, Dan.

DAN

Thanks for calling, Stan. Hey we should go ballroom dancing sometime.

STAN

I'd like that, Dan. I'll speak to you soon.

DAN

Goodbye, Stan.

STAN

Goodbye, Dan.

Dan hangs up and continues messing around with the TV and internet.

might be a little hard to maintain the tense vibe of a shocking revelation if they end the call with "well, then, great to chat again, you must come round the next time you're in town, cheers".
