Following the acrimony of the Woebot on Funky House thread, it seemed appropriate for house to have a rolling thread. Feel free to post on new releases, clubs, pirate or legit radio, whatever.

In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove.
And from this groove came the groove of all grooves.
And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldy declared,
Let there be HOUSE!

I'll kick it off with a question: DJ Superior said on Monday that there were 8 - 10 new records that typified the "new underground sound". Anybody know what they might be?

I'd like to big up steve Mac's remix of 'Hypnotized' by Sebastien Leger; great vocal, great bassline, kinda 'warmer' than most of the stuff about.

Also the Hermigervill remix of GusGus's 'Hold You', brings a bit of garagey feel to tune, fully earning its 'funky' credentials.

this is also the rolling rinse.fm thread, right?

a really cheesy prog house track just got played -- can't say that i liked it in the least

but what a great sample = a diva chastising her boy, "you know that love is a four-letter word . . . if you don't do it good, love is a four-letter word"

Yeah I heard him say that but he let it hang without a further explanation.I have previously heard him drop a couple of tracks alongside the electro house which are quite 'minimal' and utilise Grime influenced synth lines.Kind of 'Eski House' for want of a better term, though I havent picked up any of the titles so far. This stuff MIGHT be what he had in mind.I couldnt listen to the show today as the stream wasnt working and the broadcast signal was weak.

No rinse stream again today. Anybody know what gives? Is it because of this whole ammo/barefiles business?

Not sure if this is a joke, but the only ones I would rate are all on the second disc. Chicken Lips, Robot Needs Oil, and The Fix are all stand-outs. The rest of it sounds kinda the same to me.

I like the Dahlback, Maier and Swen Weber tunes too. Weber has put out 3 or so tracks in a row all based on the same bass patch. Milk it!

On another note the Prins Thomas mix of The Dub Pistols cover of Rapture by Blondie is nice.

Just bought the new Jesse Rose get physical compilation and the verdict it:

good, but not that good.

It takes until track 4 to really kick off, weird voices suddenly popping out of a great groove. Oliver $'s track is great but the Scoper and Bubba track sounds kind of lame as a lead in for Didn't I, which is obviously amazing. After Didn't I the cd does get good, but didn't I is track 8: that's quite a while to wait for things to properly get going.

I like this mix when it stays weird but Rose's material stays fairly consistently head and shoulders above anything else here. I wasn't blown away, and in a world were there are alot of amazing dj mixes up for download, i feel slightly like a sucker for paying £12.

Regarding that mix CD and mass-produced mix CDs in general:

These are all CDs released within the last week. Can someone explain to me why this aesthetic has become ubiquitous? Is there no other way to sell these mixes than with pouty, half-naked, obviously photoshopped women on the cover? I'm beginning to suspect that CDs with similar covers, which, by the way, is practically all of them, are sold for stroking rather than listening.

The same is true of a lot of flyer design.

Fit girl in her knickers nicked from loaded + city scape backdrop + floating gridlines of some description = A job well done

So you dont do SEXY AND SYLISH then? LOL! Alas it has been the way of things since {before?} the days of Speed Garage.I really could live without seeing any more of those Hed Kandi type cartoon chicks. That design has been DONE TO DEATH!

Exactly my point. Say what you will about the whole german minimal/micro scene; at least they've got some half-decent designers in the bunch.

DJL

i'm joking
I was in HMV in Oxford, UK the other day and there is a whole section devoted to dance compilations that feature the Hed Kandi (or a variation thereof) girls on the cover. It was quite a sight and really stood out from the other sections in there. Pure bright colours and bikinis.

There is a also a fairly narrow rulebook when it comes the videos for commercial dance. I find the lack of imagination with these (over several years now) slighty perverse and disturbing. The marketing departments are only interested in sales though and (teenage boys & impressionable girls?) must be buying this shit so I guess they just keep rehashing it and shovelling it into the back of distribution trucks. Surely this must come to an end soon. Doesn't look good for the artists/labels who are licensing their tracks to go on there. Makes a mockery of the true values of the scene imo.

I did however pick up an Azuli compilation hidden amongst all that Hed Kandi tat that is actually pretty decent:

Somebody should write a history on bawdy-yet-bland dance-comp covers. Disco covers don’t count.

The thing with those erotica-light videos is that people really buzz about them. I have witnessed this first-hand on many occasions. Yes, as always, it’s that lucrative horny FHM-boys demographic.

Would have thought they were as much geared towards girls, ala Paris Hilton trampyness.

Also the mythic feminine angle... they're a bit like sirens and muses, etc, which fits with the Dionysian/orgy/spectacle angle of dance.

I just dont know
feeling some of that azuli thing quite a bit. enjoying the carl craig-lite of Tyken. cant go wrong with a nice arpeggio! a lot of the first cd sounds like ppl who've listened to a lot of Get Physical etc though. not that thats necessarily a bad thing i guess.

haha Mouth 2 Mouth?! how out of place
