    Deepfakes

Did I see this on here originally? https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-cyber-deepfake-activist/deepfake-used-to-attack-activist-couple-shows-new-disinformation-frontier-idUKKCN24G15E For the most part I've only seen Deepfakes deployed in those "we put Harrison Ford in the Young Han Solo film"...

    Hitchcock

Fucking woeful. The "suspense" of the film is whether or not Psycho will be a success (apparently it was a risk at the time, what with the transgressive subject matter; hence being shot in b&w) because the Hithcocks mortgaged their house to help fund it... That was The Girl, with Toby Jones as...

    Where is the avant-garde?

I'm not sure it was so much that as a criterion for what constituted an "avant-garde" so much as there is an existing strand of filmmaking which is considered to be so, and which Under the Skin is (I suppose) not considered to be a part of (by the academy)?

    Where is the avant-garde?

My knee-jerk reaction was "well, it starred Scarlett Johansson and I saw it at the Odeon in Camden" but then I suppose a good point of comparison might be that Beckett film with Buster Keaton in it which wasn't exactly pitched at the man on the Clapham omnibus

New School Comedy Films (for want of a better name)

Adult Swim is a big part of this. Cartoon Network's late-night "anti-comedy" slot that birthed Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Eric Andre, Tim & Eric, et al. Awkwardness and discomfort, but also something about the inherent comedy/tragedy of the provinces, people trying to be charismatic and creative...

    Where is the avant-garde?

A fella on my MA referred to Under the Skin during a discussion about the avant-garde and got chewed out by the lecturer for a good ten minutes

Werner Herzog appears in the strangest places

There was quite a good piece a couple of years ago when he did that Netflix documentary about the internet. Tying together his making a "branded" film (it was bankrolled by a tech company) and Herzog's becoming a kooky brand himself. His next one's streaming for free on MUBI this weekend
