Depeche Mode

A band I suspect I've always unfairly overlooked. If I'm right the trajectory was sort of bouncy synth pop, then Vince Clarke left and they went more goth, then it was stadiums and leather kecks. Is that right? Someone school me on them cos I've never listened to the albums, just the more famous singles.

My friend had tickets to see them at 02 Arena and couldn't go so he kindly gave them to me - they were fucking expensive so I wish I could say that I enjoyed it more. Basically was ninety percent terrible unitl they did an encore with a fucked up version of Personal Jesus that was amazing. Kinda frustrating cos they can do it when they want to but they spent ages leading singalongs and being all stadium rock.

There must be at least one Depeche mode mega fan on here who can guide me on the right path.

I'm gonna have a bit of a listen to A Broken Frame now before bed, see how that goes.

I never connected much with the goth/stadium DM, but the pop singles are great.
That's more or less always been my position, but Enjoy the Silence and Personal Jesus are also brilliant singles so was thinking they might be worth a proper delve into, including the later mega selling albums, just in case.

Weren't the Detroit techno founders proper into them too?

This Broken Frame album sounds good so far, 4 tracks in. Is this the 'difficult' transitional post-Vince album? Sounds like it.

Guy a knew was vaguely connected to the former wife of... maybe Gahan in fact... anyway, he still gives her free tickets whenever they are in town and my friend went to this gig, sitting next to this woman lusting after her former husband who had long since moved on to model groupies. Sounded weird.

It's a bit weird, even though they were massive in 80s/early 90s when I was a kid I don't remember hearing their songs much on the radio apart from just can't get enough/enjoy the silence/personal Jesús sometimes. They weren't really on my radar. Am I right in saying they were one of those bands that were much bigger in the US than their home country?

Think they were big in Eastern Europe, Russia too

just before the Berlin wall tumbled down I remember hearing an interview on BBC radio one with some East German kids - they were asked "if you had one wish, what would it be?"

kid one: World Peace
kid two: an end to world poverty
kid three: to see Depeche Mode live

I had to admire her selfishness
