Up late with insomnia. The Bronze age shaman article is fascinating.

    Magick!

I like that Nadia Choucha book a lot. I think the idea of magicians and Will (big old serious capital W) seems a bit antithetical to the surrealist playfulness. I think I'd prefer the latter? I can kinda see some overlap here with Crowley pupil Kenneth Grant. His books are very heavy on the...

    Magick!

I guess you could define it as life purpose. Crowley felt what was passed to him was a new dispensation in a religious sense,(superseding Christianity) which centred the individual and his or her path through life. There's a quote someone I can't quite remember properly which states that every...

    Magick!

That reads a bit like a reworking of Crowley's definition of magick: The Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will Capital W 'cos "True Will" was a central concept for him.

I had a really powerful reaction to it in the gallery. I felt I got an insight into the song that I wouldn't normally have. It made me feel very aware of how it was speaking of and to suffering.

The footage reminded me of rap actually. Ceaseless flow, strong images but not really dwelling on any one thing.

Weird title though. What's that about? - "Love is the message" I get but don't know about the final sentence.

My memory from seeing it is that these dissonances make really clear the creativity of black culture as a collective response to suffering. This range of dizzying joyful responses leaps off the screen. If you've got any feeling for black music at all it's incredibly moving.

Thanks for all the links. I saw it when it showed in London last year. The Tate were streaming in last weekend but it's more impactful on the big screen for sure.

    what are you reading now?

I don't know - always been quite good at comprehension, and I have to admit I found the last one (The Supermale) a struggle. What I have noticed is my mind continously going back to the one I have to finish next.

One weird thing about lockdown is seeing how many people in my area own gymnastic rings. The park on a sunny day is full of 'em. Speaks to the penetration of Crossfit style approaches to fitness, plus a load of excess income.

And it was true, looking around there. 17 year old Mums. Squeezed 'em out while huffing on a Benson. Fed 'em a diet of chips.

I remember a Glaswegian mate telling me that everyone in a certain (v rough ) area - the East End maybe? - was about 3 foot high.

There's a lot about background in that. University educated lads who were in the rowing team. Fed 3 square meals a day growing up.

I think I'm an ectomorph - hard to put on muscle - though it's probably changing with age.

I was in a bar with a friend and I'd gone to get a drink and he was looking around, saw some bloke, thought "fuck, he's a big c*nt - oh, it's Dan!" - that was the back development. Main thing for me at the minute is how to sustain it. Will I still be training in a year? Open question atm.

Slap bang in the middle I'm afraid. I was becoming a bit of a fat c*nt though that's all dropped off last few months. I'm tall, which disguised it. I've stopped indulging my sweet tooth and drinking every other night, and that's what's done it. I suspect I'll find it hard to gain muscle...
