    THE PRESTIGE (2006)

I read the novel about 15 years ago. Can't remember the exact details now, but the plot is significantly different, framed around the grandchildren of Angier and Borden meeting in the present day and investigating their family feud. To be honest, the film narrative is a lot leaner (if you can...

I've just decided to become a fan of The Police

Wang Chung having a teeny weeny internet moment after John Mulaney used "To Live and Die in LA" as the theme of his week-long Netflix talk show.

Nice work if you can get it.

Make It Witchy! Ithell, Rosaleen, Leonara, Hilma, Marina, etc.,

Just ordered the reprinted Carrington deck from Fulgur - got the pre-order email earlier this week. Also Strange Attractor claim the Spare deck will ship in late Feb, so will probably pre-order that too.

    The eames lounge chair

Was gonna get one for my 40th but didn't like the leather version when I sat in it and the fabric one looks a bit wrong. Still, the original is very pretty to look at. Got a cat instead, so that's that for nice furniture.

Make It Witchy! Ithell, Rosaleen, Leonara, Hilma, Marina, etc.,

Not got any of the Fulgur Tarot decks (isn't someone bringing out an edition of Spare's deck soon?) but I did get their Parsons/Cameron "Songs for the Witch Woman" before it went out of print/trebled in price.

    Modafinil/Smart Drugs

I just tried this. +1 and +2 are pretty easy, +3 is immediately almost impossible. There's a 20 day challenge app that seems pretty good, so will try and stick with it.

    Hauntology

Right, that's hauntology sorted. Think hyperstition is next?

    Modafinil/Smart Drugs

Recently started taking 200mg of L Theanine with a strong coffee when I either need to concentrate or have some of my anxious edges knocked off. Lasts a couple of hours and the effect is small but noticeable. Takes away most of the jitters leaving a slightly cool, slightly woolly feeling in the...

    Hauntology

But could there be a musical "lost future" without the prior existence of a "futuristic music"? Not disputing that there are a lot of possible inflections, but the cultural throughline mostly seems to be "the future seemed a lot brighter when I brought my first synth".

    "Musicals"

I'd put Patti LuPone's Rose in Gypsy alongside Solti's Parsifal as one of my favorite musical readings.

    what are you reading now?

Sex and Rage by Eve Babitz. Mostly autobiography I think. She seems to have had a lot of fun, lucky thing. "Luck is like beauty or diamond earrings: people who have it cannot simply stay home."

    Hauntology

I was being glib, but not insincere. But by "sad" I suppose I really mean... not optimistic. It doesn't seem coincidental that it was a largely electronic form (unless there's some hauntological jangle pop I'm unaware of). All the sounds of thrusting, forward-looking 80s electronica, recast as...

    Hauntology

Now that some time has passed, was hauntology in music really just sad electronica?

    The Prose Stylist

DFW stikes me as more of a voicey writer than a stylist, though he was capable of writing a great sentence when he wanted to. But in a lot of his fiction, syntactic elegance would be counterproductive to the themes he was writing about.

    The Prose Stylist

Jesus, that was part of Self's great modernist opus? Awful. Personally I think DeLillo has got substance to go with the style, but the style is so singular that it draws the eye. He's particularly great at quickly sketching place with these little runs of adjectives and sudden switches from...

    Blood Meridian

Probably the last of those stentorian, oracular American novelists, who all grew up in a less teeming world where it still seemed possible to sum things up.

    Primal Scream

Shite band. In the 90s they were dance music for people too apprehensive to dance and rock music for people too fixated on the present to just listen to the Stones.
