    Trading records for a living

Friend of a friend of mine does this. He's Japanese, lives here in the States, travels the country in this Econoline and scours record stores. Then, he sells the records in Japan. I get the impression he does quite well, but don't have any verification of that. I do know that he doesn't own...

    Scritti Politti

Yes, this is an incredible compilation of material. The compositions sounds completely nonsensical until you've heard them a few times and then you realize that there is an actual structure. The rest of the discography is loses its appeal sequentially for me. "Songs to Remember" has a few...

I think you mean Markus Popp. Marcus Schmickler is neither a PR machine, nor a pretentious schmuck. ;)

Sounds, effects, instruments that sound great for a bit but then sound passé very qui

Not to nitpick, but every record has reverb on it. It's a matter of employing reverb that sounds "natural" or not, be it actual reverb of a space or artificial reverb. My question before was about what constitutes "natural" reverb.

Sounds, effects, instruments that sound great for a bit but then sound passé very qui

I agree completely with oblioblioblio's comments. However, I can't resist two more: Bucephalus bouncing ball and heavy plate reverb on the snare. However, what's interesting is what constitutes annoying fad and what doesn't. I mean, reverb, for example, is on virtually every recording and it...

    György Ligeti

It's funny this topic came up because I've been listening to Organ Study no. 1 "Harmonies" everyday for the past month. I'm not sure why it is so relevant to me right now, but it is simply one of the most beautiful, frightening, otherworldly pieces of music I've ever heard. The sound blocks...

    Albini, new Shellac, new Stooges

Kinda old, you've probably seen it before, but Albini's relationship with the Reader has changed since this excellent exchange: http://www.chicagoreader.com/hitsville/pander.html.

    1970s LA Rarities

Just thinking aloud...I wonder how many obscurities actually exist of this stuff. I guess I'm thinking of 70s LA music as being fed by a similar situation as 70s Hollywood. If you've read Easy Riders and Raging Bulls, you might catch my drift. Basically, in the late 60s/early 70s the film...

    Minimal techno blowing up

I have to admit that the resurgence of the Mika Vainio school of minimalism as a hyped phenom is kind of baffling to me. Maybe it's my listening habits and the people I congregate with, but it really never went away. The sleeparchive stuff is alright I guess. I picked up the first 12" and...

    1970s LA Rarities

I really enjoyed the original Woebot blog post as it led me to some music that I ignored (as usual). I first heard the David Crosby solo record a few years ago and always loved it, but it kind of felt like a guilty pleasure--anyways it's nice to know that that isn't necessarily the case...

    Minimal techno blowing up

Couldn't have summed it up better myself. Here in Chicago, until recently I ran a (mostly) minimal night and while occasionally we'd have an unexpected good turn-out, it was mostly the same few people coming month-after-month.

    How to demo?

This is the route I've personally taken. While it is more difficult to have the time and energy at the end of the day and on the weekends in addition to having a social life and other interests (why can I no longer finish any books I start?), I think that I find this personally more satisfying...

    How to demo?

I've had a reasonable amount of luck with sending out demos. Bruno is correct, it's how you package the product and yourself. I've always made the point of sending a hefty package (not too hefty if air mail) to a few labels that I think might be interested. The package includes actual copies...

    things like ehlers, fennesz, o'rourke

Great list! I'd add this one also: http://www.discogs.com/release/94961. I think only 500 of these were pressed up, but if you can land a copy, it comes highly recommended--especially "musicforcicadas." I'd also second "Insulation" by Oren Ambarchi. Really, really beautiful.

I have Monotonprodukt 07 20y++ but I didn't know that Blau even existed. Is it similar to the second record?

    the late night city aesthetic

As an aside, the guitarist from Sun Palace emailed me about a year ago after I listed "Rude Movements" in a setlist (I guess obscure 80s 12" producers Google themselves). He said they are in discussions to rerelease a remaster of the track as well as some unreleased material. That would be...
