    the late night city aesthetic

i thought this was going to be about a lot of burial sounding stuff. but im pleased it isnt. things like secret garden make me think of smokey robinson's quiet storm (and quiet storm soul in general really), or tony toni tone's anniversary (its pretty epic at about 9 mins).

    Juke

producers using the same samples is cool with me - as long as they do something else with it rather than just loop it. thats what competition is about i thought, seeing who can do something better with it. but all that stuff is interesting. i still like the diamond album. the first half...

    Black Mirror

not seen the last one, but episode 2 didnt feel that far fetched really. biking to produce energy, popups you cant avoid, huge screens as walls, that doesnt seem that far off. was a bit too obvious in a way, but still felt good to have someone make drama reflecting the inherent crapness of a lot...

    Classic Films on Youtube

    Hip Hop '11

yeah, the new one. though this - has to be good. wackas album (not heard any mix cds) is one of my favourite albums too, but i think that was last year (didnt get released here til 2011 though so it still counts).

    Hip Hop '11

this juicy j mixtape might be the best hip hop mix cd/album ive heard all year. virtually every beat is amazing. and juicy has a lot of surprisingly memorable one liners. who has done a better tape this year?

    the megaupload song

this prob doesnt deserve its own thread, but i thought it was funny. and amazing actually. why did yousendit never think of this? or sendspace? im trying to think of other filesharing companies that have faded (RIP) but might not have done had they had done something like this. suppose if youre...

    Twees're Good (except they're not)

the worst offender prob has to be the ad with a twee version of sweet child of mine. wasnt even lol-worthy. it was just awful.

    Twees're Good (except they're not)

i think theres a space for gentle, sensitive music, just not music made by people trying really hard to sound like that, or innocent, and sweet, and playful and naive, when theyre anything but. sounds really fake.

    Twees're Good (except they're not)

if you think juno is a terrible film (which it is - it tries way too hard to be cool/blithe) or wore its rock cred way too heavily, you need to watch 500 days of summer, which is basically like one long advert for someones itunes 80s indie rock playlist, and even more twee.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

a matter of life and death. what a good film. though the american/british standoff did go off track a bit, it just looks amazing.

    Funky/London/UK House

as i cant really afford much vinyl at the moment, im fine with the lack of infrastructure! taken a pretty long couple of months break from checking out marcus but am trying to catch up again and this show is seriously good (this has been helping me work)...

rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

pretty obvious that brostep and post-dubstep arent bona fide inheritors of the HC. trying to make cases for either seems pointless. you could make a much easier case for brostep, its antecedent being happy hardcore (brainless music to get off your tits to etc), and the fact its everywhere now...

    Juke

i know i should be excited about this but it doesnt sound juke/footwork enough imo. the t2 filth track is alright though. these are more on the juke than footwork side though.

rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

this is more dubstep, just cos its harder, but its brilliant. basically like old benga but still great. kicks in around the 1 min mark. wish there was more stuff like this around (there probably is, i just dont have the patience these days to sift through it all)

i should see the directors cut from the sounds of it..

films you've seen recently and would NOT recommend

the main thing i thought was that linda blairs voice would maybe have been scarier if it didnt sound deep/devil/demonic-ish, a lot of what she said was pretty funny/silly more than scary, but that the film didnt really do enough to show the backstory of the girl, so when she got possessed, it...

films you've seen recently and would NOT recommend

rich - totally right about the heavy handedness of the 'famous' cameos in MIP. PA3 was scary in places, thats true, but it just seemed like a lot of retreads of stuff in the last one. on a similar note, i recently saw the exorcist for the first time (i know i know, i dont know how ive never...
