    The new Ethnomusicology

thanks for the link to that mix of mine, michael! i also feel like this conversation produces intense deja vu. but the fact that such an article as that which got this going can still be published with a straight face is evidence enough that perceptions of "world music" / "ethnomusicology"...

    Juke

i would like to second the request for "May Be Sum Day" it's a "waltz" so not exactly the most DJ friendly, but that is maybe all the better reason to include it. so weird, so good. excited to learn of this project. it's about time (both for producers like nate and for labels like mu)!

    Rampin Shop

panamanian versions aplenty hi all- thx for the shouts! don't make it over here often enough... incidentally, if ppl don't like the vybz version, panamanian reggae artists have offered up dozens of their own, inspired by "rampin shop" -- http://wayneandwax.com/?p=1800

Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Greensleeves Vampires

jeeeeezus! the saga continues, e? amazing recordings... some favorite quotables from mr.brown: "you'll get a lightning bolt" // "you wasn't there jammys" // "you never mix none of them tracks there" // "is i mix everything" // "you know-seh you're lying" // "you gonna do me something?" //...

    Bollywood Breaks

all right - i finally got around to making and posting that mashup of the jay-z track with the abdel-halim hafez composition that timbaland "bit" for the beat. i also try to engage some of the legal/musical/political issues inherent to the production. hope you dig. http://riddimmethod.net/?p=23

    Bollywood Breaks

"big pimpin'" samples an egyptian pop song. see this for an interesting perspective on it: http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2000/484/cu2.htm i'm about to mash the original together with a loop from the jay-z version. it sounds pretty wild. look for that on riddimmethod.net soon. "indian...

    Spanish Reggae Rant.

last time i checked jamaica was in "the west"--just for the record. these clash of civilization dichotomies are not often very helpful, especially when we're considering relationships and interpenetration. jamaica is easily as "western" as, say, miami or london. as for grime's relation to...

    Spanish Reggae Rant.

woebot, you've essentially sensed the background to my dissertation/book: i.e., understanding jamaican music in the context of the caribbean, the americas (north and south and central), and the wider world, and understanding the music of the americas and the wider world in the context of...

Indian influences in the reggae 'nuum

near eastern, middle eastern, far eastern, or south(east) asian, orientalism tends to conflate all of these easterns, as it is a projection of the west. i agree, tho, that the orientalist flavor in much of this stuff, from hip-hop to reggae to grime, has been more focused on the signifiers of...

Indian influences in the reggae 'nuum

the name "diwali" sounds indian, of course. the riddim "diwali" does not, to my ears anyway. when it hit big, i saw a lot of people make comparisons to bhangra, but i just don't hear it. the rhythmic qualities--in particular the bassline which has now been borrowed by a number of pop acts--are...

Indian influences in the reggae 'nuum

far as i know, there has been little work in this area. most of the (ethno)musicology that looks at east indian music in the west indies focuses on "trad" contexts for it: i.e., music in east indian communities. i'd love to see more on the question of musical fusions and mutual influence...

records that sound better at the wrong speed

no slo-mo partially prodded by this thread, some thoughts on, and attempts at, "unscrewed" music: http://wayneandwax.blogspot.com/2005/07/screwed-and-unscrewed-no-slo-mo.html

records that sound better at the wrong speed

time is loose once, in a college-days haze of high grade listening, i mistakenly played a booker t and the mgs 45 at 33. the result was sublime: thick and heavy, with more emotional resonance on the crescendos than at normal speed. really amazing stuff. i later recorded it for posterity...

    mapping riddims

yeah, right now it's more suggestive than deeply descriptive. the data's all in there, but it's a bit dense. if you look at the picture full size, you can at least see the way that "real rock" and "stalag" break off from the pack of the other top 20 versioned rhythms. i've seen some other maps...

    mapping riddims

can't remember if this has already been posted up here: http://jessekriss.com/projects/samplinghistory/ but it's on a similar wavelength, illustrating musical relationships using internet-aggregated data (in this case hip-hop and the-breaks.com, as opposed to reggae and reggae-riddims.com)...
