Um, not sure about Celtic mysticism with regard to this, but Norse mythology - from my reading, anyway, though others vehemently disagree - Norse mythology taught me to be very, very wary of blokes with one eye.

Like Gordon Brown.

Or Nick Griffin.
True. If they can't even look after their own eye, why would you trust them with anything else?

Zhao.

please explain:

why the difference between the two isn't obvious.

It's one thing to say, yeah, learn about cultures, it's another to say older cultures are infinitely preferable to newer ones because they were more "mysterious" whatever that's supposed to mean.

infinitely preferable?

am i reading this wrong or is nomad making a case for a lesbian gene that explains the lack of free will in choosing whether to be gay and makes them raise psychologically superior children ?

I remember reading that it's possible a large party of peoples sexuality had to do with testosterone levels in the womb, so that means there can be biological reasons beyond simple genetics, a genetic explanation being in some ways counter-intuitive. Although maybe there is some genetic factors too?

i'm wondering if i have a latent vegetarian gene? i mean i probably have a genetic predisposition to kill but i choose not to. so maybe it's only sexual deviants who lack the free will to counter their 'nature '? seems like too convenient an excuse to absolve them of the sin of iniquity.

Yes, natally the fact that testosterone can be seen as a sort of foreign body by the host can cause problems during fetal development, apparently. It's more complicated than that. But that's the gist of it.

Haha, Sickboy, nice one.

Yeah, Zhao, it's me who's not being rational here. Clearly.

Courtesy of one of the best posters of the internets, Feynmaniac:

Mooney's Law:
When someone criticizes an opponent for incivility it is almost certain that during the process they will be even more uncivil.

There's a correlate to this one, too. We'll call it Zhao's Law.

When someone criticizes an opponent for being irrational or "crazy", it is almost certain that during the process they will prove themselves more irrational or crazier than their opponent.

anyone with functioning eyes who knows how to read english can tell you, that i never said anything is preferable to anything.

what i did say is there are cultural riches, dimensions of life experience, in mystical cultures such as Thailand and Indonesia, that are lost to us, which can be beneficial.

you still need to explain why saying the above is not OK, but saying the Ancient Celtic mysticim have a lot to teach us is perfectly fine.

it seems like now you are just clearly being unreasonable, exactly like last time, during the Pre Civilization debate, when you continued to dismiss my position as "hippie bullshit" and "unscientific", while refusing to read the peer-reviewed papers i linked to.

please prove me wrong.

*almost snorts coffee all over key board*

Zhao, look at your own posts. Ffs!!!

You just said like 8 trillion times that "we forgot more than we know" and that we've "lost" the ability to live a life full of imagination, and that our lives lack a crucial dimension that the ancient peoples had in spades.

Is this some kind of sick joke?

Do you do this as some kind of sick joke where you start a really ridiculous circular argument full of overblown statements and then continually accuse people of "misunderstanding" or misquoting you when they're very obviously restating verbatim what you said?

FACEPALM.

There is a big difference between saying it's good to learn history and saying what you've said. If you can't see that, I worry about your intellectual capabilities.

As for "last time"...those "papers" were ONE paper you downloaded from the internet by Jared Diamond, and then iirc a couple of mp3s of him speaking.

There was nothing in any of them about lost spiritual utopias, either. Only about the relative levels of economic and social stratification pre- and post-agrarianism.
