not trying to be snarky, its a genuine question. if anything your comment was snarkier than mine. This is a discussion forum made up of people who, in the main aren't producers, just music fans. That doesn't mean their opinion is any less valid, or that you can just dismiss it as 'gas' when someone doesn't share your opinion on something.

Lots of people here have, quite justifiable negative points to make about this music and want to argue them through properly, just try not take it so personally.

Blackdown, with the utmost respect, I can appreciate that as a DJ, Producer, label owner and journalist yourself, you put youself in a potentially difficult position by getting involved in these discussions. It must be almost impossible not to take these criticisms personally.

@the entire thread, people need to take all this negative gas, & use it positively to make beats they rate...
(c) Caspa and Rusko, 2008. Could we get a house mix of Moaners on the go?

What I'm finding a bit weird is that a lot of the criticism in this thread re beat programming, groove etc seems to come from a very musicianly angle, whereas if I was going to moan about anything it's that the whole thing needs a bit more cheap ruffneck minimalism. We all seem to have gone a bit rare groove.

Having said that, I'm never sure that trying to pin down exactly what you don't like about music - or rather exact what you're indifferent to about it - is actually useful for much except making you feel smug about how 'right' your taste in music is.

Let's face it, house music people hate garage music. They always have and always will. Pick up a copy of Mixmag in 2000 and besides the uk garage reviews page the word garage was a hugely dirty one.

It doesn't help that bass music has been converging over the last 2 years. It seems as muso neeks we need clear hard genre names and well defined tribal boundaries to align ourselves in. None of this all encompassing bass music/disparate scene nonsense. :p

Was going to say, Dark Sky seem like really good producers.

Andy was right about Brackles shows on Rinse, I'm biased a bit cos he's a mate but I've really enjoyed every show I've heard of his recently. He plays straight uk funky, a bit of house etc. but there's also a lot of stuff that would be classified under this thread probably that is really strong.

Also, I think this stuff can provide things that you don't get in rougher/cheesier genres. I realised this listening to Kode 9's Essential Mix the other day, especially hearing one of his new tunes 'Love Is The Drug' I think. There was a tune on his djkicks mix which I thought was really great until that trademark mournful detuned synth came in, before that it was very light and pulsing, more like a straight UK funky tune. But I actually love those strange melancholic chord sequences he uses in tunes like 'Love Is The Drug' and 'Black Sun', they conjure a certain mood that you wouldn't really find in, say, an Ill Blu tune. But then, I think the drums/bass in 'Black Sun' is great, very solid but loose enough to do something like a dubstep skank to it.

Don't know what you took from my post and the one previous, but the stuff I PERSONALLY expose myself to that could be categorised in this 'scene' I rate. Fair enough I was generalising a bit, as I didn't comment on which producers ARE but I still stand by it being an age thing.

Horrible day in work mate, sorry if it was a bit of a vitriol aimed at you; was initially responding to the "intelligent drums" bit and went on a tangent.

The point I attempted to make in a mid-asbestos cloud of incoherence was simply that 9/10 of the stuff coming out under a "future garage" banner is some of the blandest music I've ever heard. Lifeless, dull shit. And I know this can apply to a lot of music in nascent stages but there's just nothing about this that makes much sense to me, there isn't.

I just wish there was more life to the stuff that's happening but there isn't. It's kind of mirrored in the Funky thread actually- everything's gone all tasteful and it's a bit shit.

I don't know what negative gas is.

god i hope they give you proper masks paul, asbestos is no joke.

tepidness and stiffness in future garage was all so predictable, i tried to pre-empt it here but it was never going to affect anything.

This dark sky remix is amazing but fark they've got some nuts views on soundcloud!

Just when you mention Brackles. It goes back to when we were talking about 'focus'.

Despite all the shite out there, the DJs are still putting together two hours of quality on radio week in week out.

Its gone tasteful on all sides, be it a reaction to brostep on one hand or the funky lot getting more influenced by trad house where bland 'deepness' is everywhere these days but the likes of Brackles and Petchy have no bother avoiding it.

Benny mentioned not everyone is producing but most have a set of decks and thats still where it counts imo.

really? I didnt find anything exciting about that release whatsoever, just usual boom kisssh dubstep??

Maybe she's had 2, the one i'm talking about was really slow DEEP house

I don't think Blawan merges Dubstep & Funky, I don't see his tunes as having any connection to UK Funky the genre. They just are damn funky (in the old sense of the word) He seems to have closer links to Techno if anything.

a lot of the criticism in this thread re beat programming, groove etc seems to come from a very musicianly angle, whereas if I was going to moan about anything it's that the whole thing needs a bit more cheap ruffneck minimalism. We all seem to have gone a bit rare groove.

That wasn't my intention at all, when I talk about groove and beat programming i'm talking about a feeling, i'm talking about tunes that you can't help wiggling your arse and twitching your shoulders to.
Nothing to do with rare groove or overt musicianlyness (if that's a word)
The rawest Grime can do this just as well as a polished House tune.
Cheap ruffneck minimalism is often the most funky (very difficult to use this word now) as it's not over-thought it's felt.

Let's face it, house music people hate garage music. They always have and always will.

I'm sure you're probably joking a bit here, but this is silly. I love House and I love Garage, as i'm sure lots of the people posting here do, it's all the same thing really.

@the entire thread, people need to take all this negative gas, & use it positively to make beats they rate...

Working on that as well of course (when time permits) and I acknowledge the fact that it's really really hard to do well. Doesn't mean that I want to listen to other people doing it badly though I can listen to my own tunes for that
Also doesn't mean I can't voice my frustrations as well as my praise. Thought out negative criticism is just as important as hypeing things that you love, and it's done out of a love for amazing music.
As a label owner, producer, dj and journalist you're putting yourself (and your musical preferences) on a pedestal. It's a two-way street, if you're recieving attention for your musical tastes you have to expect that sometimes people are going to take you to task over your selections.
If you want everyone to be positive and in agreement maybe you should be posting on a forum called Conssensus?

Coming back to your show I was listening to the Zomby mini mix and Eski mix on the plane last night.
So good! At lot of the synth stuff in this thread is clearly taking it's cues from Zomby but those mixes were a reminder of what a different league he's in.
Come back Zomby we need you! (even if you are a negative arsehole on forums :D)

cue mad scramble for credit cards, 'buy on sight' usually applies

I get what I think you're saying Wise - it doesnt matter which sound it is as long as it has some bump/groove? it has to move you,

Exactly, even if you're sitting listening on headphones tunes that make you dance mentally.
Don't know if everyone does this but I when I hear good tunes with my eyes shut I always picture people moving to them.

Creepy Crawlies on the B side of the new Ossie release is interesting, has quite an electro (in the old skool sense) vibe to it without using any of the obvious signifiers, and very funky drums :D
