no real rhyme or reason to these (since some are pretty different, though there's a definite abstract curve running through a couple shall we say, and tbf none of them are hungry young things - i mean they're all contemporary in the sense of still going [!] w the exception of Fred Williams who died in 1982 - but rather old guard in contemporary terms) but off the top of my head and in no particular order five absolute fave painters that are still around, who i would always mention (quite different to Richter, some certainly)

i am sure somebody like oh idk Sloane would be able to pinpoint lots of exciting new stuff

Paula Rego
Frank Stella
Bridget Riley (i want to put something up about her at somedisco soon)
Ding Yi
Fred Williams

thanks. while googleing Ding Yi i found Zhang Xiaotao:

i like them as abstraction, but then the rather abject disgusting biological realism gives them that visceral punch.

anyone like Ross Bleckner (RIP)?

I was thinking about the YBAs the other day and their "impact". I always sort of thought they were a third rate imitation of American 80s guys like Mike Kelley and Jeff Koons. My theory is that the yanks really were freaks during the 80s: Koons is a total OCD, anal retentive, Jackson style weirdo. Kelley came up, (like Raymond Pettibon) through the hardcore punk scene. In England, Punk was just part of the scenery. Everybody over here is already nihilistic and dismissive of pretence and artifice. Putting a shark in a tank or pissing your bed is business as usual. "Cocking a snook" at the establishment has been light entertainment since Lennon asked the folks in the posh seats to rattle their jewellery. We love it.

cheers swears. it makes sense that your tastes are basically diametrically opposed to mine. which is cool.

Why? I like all the stuff you posted on this thread. Plus Ross Bleckner is totally 80s simulationist pomo.

liking swears' thoughts there, heh.

i have some photos of the modern gallery at the Smithsonian (the Hirshhorn) from the very fine sculpture garden there and among others there's some Koons. i'll try to put em up if i can find em since you mentioned JK swears.

everything put up so far is doing it for me, Fritsch a new one on me swears i must investigate.

btw given Zhao mentioned another Chinese painter i thought i would say that i saw Brit collector Frank Cohen's (fairly hodge-podge) showing of some new Asian art (well, Japanese, Chinese and Indian artists) in Manchester recently. Fang Lijun from Hebei had one painting, a large canvas (the image is NOT online, though you can see other examples of his work) of faint repeated males among wispy clouds. it was very good.

part of the Cynical Realism lot (if you wiki their entry the first source is a dismissive Guardian piece which i have to admit didn't convince me; the second source is a more supportive piece from another Guardian writer which i found more persuasive personally).

quite different to a lot of the rest of his stuff i've been able to see online but thought i'd mention in particular for you Z :)

speaking of YBA, Anya Gallaccio at the East Country Yard Show in 1990

i liked Hirst's dots series, the 'Spot' ones, though Tony Oursler does things far better w skulls. Sarah Lucas FTW...

anyone like Gilbert & George?

i love 'em.

here are 11 photos from me public FB of some film i saw at the Hirshhorn from Semiconductor. it may well be shit, but thought i'd show willing and put them up. i have a ton of photos from there but none of the others are online yet (inc the JK stuff, etc) except for the second link, which is just four of Frank Stella. their Stella was quite unlike my first major immersion in Stella in a large US gallery, as the Chicago Art Institute has one of his large dark canvases...

(you are allowed to photograph the work there unless otherwise requested not to. beware my cheap cam w its green hues mind you.)

Hue and Cry

swears' Sherman and McCarthy and Dion are doing it for me right now, though they all are really. i do like the Halley.

Going to a gallery at least once a week: if you are in London try and make it to the White Cube by Picadilly Circus/Green Park next week to catch Cerith Wyn Evans S=U=P=E=R=S=T=R=U=C=T=U=R=E before it's too late http://www.whitecube.com/exhibitions/wyn evans/ The title is silly, the two other works (a sound installation and some framed cut-outs of poetry) are unexceptional, but this thing radiates white HEAT.

Susan Hiller one of my favourite artists, Magic Lantern is just brilliant (sound and slides)

Ross Bleckner may have been partially interested in semiotics, but that is not what i love about his work: it is rather the ethereal, mysterious, and sense of transcendence which i see in it. giving form to the immaterial.

but the stuff you posted are certainly "simulationist pomo" steeped in ironic theatricality. i appreciate most of them and find lots of their work interesting (some obv. more than others), but just personally, it is not what i look for.

but don't get me started on this Peter Halley... "institutional critique"? with faux geometric abstraction that look like ikea? yikes...
