Darned cockwombles.
one of his lesser-recognised influences, but definitely so. the genius of the man never ceases to amaze me - well, OK, it ceased to amaze me around the time of Little Wonder, but that's another tale.

The expression and redemption of alienation through self-alienisation.

It's both literal and surreal.

That applies to both Bowie and Clinton of course.

The 80s (and late 70s) wer completely rife with weird affected vocals in pop.

You know, what is she doing?
Or the obvious -
Not limited to the 80s though. Now it's auto-tune?

It goes all the way back to Doo-wop and the start of Rock and Roll. Even weird affected vocals in Jazz before that.

talking heads was definetly what i had in mind...
obviously people have put on stupid voices before the 80s... i am aware of that... just seemed to become the norm in the 80s... i would include autotune as an extension of that... dunno about everything else you lot have said....
