Hypnagogic pop

Aww Nein

Wild Palms
i guess the obvious (too much to mention) precursor would be dream pop... whats the difference between dreams and hypnagogic states? the later sounding more clinical, and with less emphasis on "fantasy" i guess...

would love to check out that Memory Vague DVD, the youtube clips i've seen are interesting, how much stuff is on the DVD?

Oneohtix's youtube channel is also pretty good

as is this video he directed (the song should really be in the as yet non-existant "Drag / witch house" thread...

it doesn't really seem to belong in this thread, but i can't really think of a more appropriate place to ask about Salem. I've been listening to Fuckt again recently, and thinking that it is at least somewhat amazing, in spite of its being ridiculously raw. Something about the dutty, perverse pathos they have going on at times (whenusleep, wept et cetera) that is so shockingly immediate... it feels really necessary that they or someone else plumb that particular path farther.

i guess they've had an album in the works for a while or something?
anyone else doing similar stuff worth looking into?
i had someone mention a group called White Ring in relation to them before... looks like they dabble with screw techniques as well? any others (for that reason or others?)

maybe within the context of the thread, one could reconcile them on account of their having some kind of relation to dream-pop (and by extension Shoegaze) as well?

funny: listening to this Sun Araw album just now, it's sounding a little bit like i think i hoped bands like Sunburned Hand of Man and No Neck Blues Band (and so on) would sound more often, a good 5 years ago.

Salem and the bands they've inspired (pretty much single-handedly, by the sounds of some of them) have been lumped in under the 'Witch House' tag now, I think.

That makes some kind of sense, given this ::: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witch_House ::: but I still think the term is clumsy, and prefer its other recently given name 'drag'.

Other bands of their ilk include White Ring, Balam Acab, oOoOO and within the next couple of months probably a thousand other MySpace hacks in their stead, some of which will be decent and exaggerate some of the sound's interesting subtleties into own idiosyncracies, others who will just suck really fucking hard because this is a hard sadness to pull off.

Anyway, cynicism aside the whole 'drag' scene seems already to centre around Tri Angle records, which was set up by Robin from 20jfg.

What I love about Salem is how visceral it is... they make some of the most physically affecting music I've ever heard. I like how they've incorporated dream-pop influences too, because it ties in with something Jack told me when I interviewed him last year (maybe 2008, actually?) ::: http://nopaininpop.com/2009/01/swinging-jaw-salem/

Easy to exist at that border between real and dream when you only have 5 hours of sleep every other night, I suppose. Album's on its way pretty soon through I Am Sound. There are/were various track-by-tracks floating around online... should have my copy tomorrow.

I get what you mean about Sun Araw too.

Haha, this thread is like a bad dream. People are discussing "Witch House" like it's a serious genre. I thought it was some bullshit some art bum kids in Baltimore came up with to describe their attempts at like...80's coldwave or something.

And "Tri Angle" records. Hahaha....that hipster obsession with triangles. That shit's everywhere.

nah you're like a bad dream really, with yr big teacher voice and your hands on yr hipsters.
Its easy to attack new trends for being new trends really, big up for recognising that.

Oh, come on. Don't act like these guys aren't at least slightly ridiculous.

yeah but so is everything in music, everything has its own bad news or spinal tap, it's still an interesting new little scene, hipsters are the easiest people in the world to parody .

Especially when they are doing it to themselves.

The Toro Y Moi album is outstanding for what it's worth. "Lissoms" is so good. Opens up with some Detroit strings and goes into Zomby wonkiness and ends up reminding me of Todd Edwards with the way it uses samples and dissonance. All that in 2 minutes and 13 seconds.

most of that stuff i've heard doesn't even have a remotely house-like beat. "drag" is def a better name..

i'm not feeling most of the imitators but i do think they stand as a testament to how original a statement salem's is. i also think their press has been horribly mismanaged (not counting the no pain in pop and butt interviews) and they've been forced to show their faces too often - and it's turned highly affecting music into a little bit of a joke about witches, triangles, and art students pretending to be burnouts, which is unfair.
it isn't 'cold' or hipster-austere, no matter how removed from rust belt burnout they actually are...most of it feels like a long teary hug, or that point of depression that circles around to nihilistic faux-thugginess, swagger from having hurt too much. the other 'witch house' acts seem slightly ridiculous because there isn't that same gut-wrenching emotion...most (that i'm aware of) haven't released statements like FuCKT yet, but all have very calculated myspaces. uhh where am i going with this.

No one's 'discussing' the phrase like it's a serious genre - just said it's a clumsy term I've heard people use when talking about Salem et al.

Pretty sure whichever French hack first thought up 'La Vague Froid' was teased for it too.

yeah seems there a bit too much of a LOL hipsters vibe going on here. Theres a clear line between the guys with the ideas and the shit bands looking for the next big post animal collective sound.

That aside, the new James ferraro record 'Feed me' is amazing. Like eating mushrooms grown in an old pizza box full of troma videos
