The AKG's are great, you can wear them for hours and not notice it. really durable aswell, the amount of times ive smashed them to the floor by tripping over the cord and nothing has broken. Mine are looking a little bit worse for wear around the the outer padding but they are getting on to 5 years old now.

...whereas I'm on my second pair of Sonys in 11 years. They get duller sounding over time while the black stuff that covers the foam flakes off and sticks to my neck and ears. I look like plague case :slanted:

I've used a pair Sennheiser HD 280 Pros for the last four years or so. Flat response, super sturdy however they clamp onto your ears like a vice

Still haven't made a decision but I'm going to check out some Beyer Dynamics this week. Anyone have experience with the DT770s (closed) or DT880s (semi-closed)? I want to use them for both everyday listening and occasional (for now) production, which is making it a little hard to settle on criteria.

I've been leaning toward the 770s for the isolation but I'm concerned about exaggerated bass. The response curve below 100Hz is a bit crazy. On the other hand, people have commented that that makes them excellent for discerning low-end detail where studios monitors trail off. That's something I'd appreciate. While for everyday listening I like solid/accurate but not overblown bass. The 880s are supposed to lighter and more accurate, which would be great if the bottom is still in place. What I wouldn't want is for them to be so clinical that casual listening becomes duller. A friend recently bought AKG K702s for studio use and loves them for that purpose, but described their sound as "grey."

I know ultimately I just have to listen for myself but any thoughts would be appreciated.

i use DT880s.. they've been great... i also had some DT770s and they were great but they got sat on and broke. i'm glad i spent the extra twenny biff for the 880s the second time around.. they're quite unforgivingly clear .. but good i think. nice bass at relatively low volume

thanks routes. i'm going to bring eleh to gauge the low end.

btw, which impedance did you get? the place where they're on sale only has the 32 and 250 ohm versions (the hifi models). the pros come in an 80s ohm version which is closer to the sony and sennheiser standard. i'm torn because i'll be using them with audio gear (higher impedance) but also a desktop with a 65 ohm headphone output. confusing

Well I spent an hour and a half in the shop comparing and I left with the 880s (250 ohm). I'm in velvet-cupped heaven :)

Reckon that's a good choice, nomos.

I use a pair of 80 ohm DT770s purely for playback and the occasional mix. And whilst they're genuinely fantastic cans, the low-end is, for me, a little too hyperbolised for production purposes.

have a pair of the popular senn HD600s and cannot recommend them for a flat response. they're nice enough cans, fairly comfy, but for actual critical listening, nah.

I have AKG's (K127). They're great, give a very nice and detailed sound. No doubt they're great for 'monitor'-work.

On the other hand, I noticed I listen less and less to music because of them. At first, I thought it was just because I didn't find any music worthwhile to listen anymore. While that certainly is the case to a certain extent, it has also to do with listening fatigue. Listening to this rich, detailed sound through headphones a whole day long, each day, easily gets tiring. For listening music on the background, they're not really suited -at least not for the whole day.
