At what point does a label owners dedication to that labels musical direction get muddied by the artists going off on a tangent?

So Kode9 loves the earlier work of Darkstar and sends them off to record an album, they come back telling him about a change of line up, a new singer and present him with a CD chock full of JB tinged indi-fodder. It has to be an uncomfortable moment as he looks into their little glowing hope-filled faces whilst listening to it in his big label boss chair, elbows on the Simon Cowell-style desk he's just had installed, fingers steepled in front of his face.

Not heard it yet mind, maybe its fucking awesome.

Given you haven't even heard the album, I really think you should shut the fuck up. I hope you're proud of your conjecture when you wake up of a morning. That was a hideous thing to write. I hope people damn you before they've met you.

I was joking! I just found all the worrying about the JB comparisons quite amusing. Kode9 has clearly stated his mission to explore new styles with hyperdub. I say bring it on.

I would love it if he had an office like Simon cowell though.

Can't stop listening to this album...

me either. i'm finding it really melancholy. i mean i can see why, having read the nine interview. i listened to it for the first time on a wet tuesday, after an, ahem, heavy weekend the night before, that made it all the more gut-wrenching.. what james says about london at the end is so moving, too.

i like the instrumental stuff i've heard.

the "need you" track is very, very nice but i can't get with the untreated vocals quite.

well, the album is about 80% processed vocals + "Aidy's Girl..." which is instrumental. it's a really strong album, been listening to it non stop.

who knows...
"Our first [album] working title... was Check My Machine, after the Paul McCartney song. The group of tracks on that initial album was [sic] different... very much what people would expect from a Darkstar album. But personally we couldn't follow through with that. It felt that we were doing something to get it over with and not learning anything in return. It was a convenient route and to be honest [was] boring. We scrapped nearly all the album and started again. This was around late December 09.

i dont care if it was just 10 different versions of need you/aidy's girl, i still would love to hear the "first album's" material : (

out to them for doing what feels right though.

i really nearly didn't buy it (i was a bit put off by the indie/boy band vibe but wanted to qualify for free P&P on Boomkat) but i'm SO glad i did, it's lovely. the only down side is that just after i received the CD and had been rinsing it for a day or so, i went down with norovirus, so at the moment all the songs are tinged with unwelcome flashbacks to being in a delirious fever, unable to sleep, vomiting into a cardboard box on the hour every hour while the same three-second snippet of "Under One Roof" plays in my head on a psychosis-inducing loop. but it's a great album!

Come on man, at least get a saucepan. Cardboard box is no kind of plan.
