Listening to music on a computer

i just got a pair of harmon/kardon computer speakers to plug into my mac, have a question about optimal way to set up the volume.

is it better to have the volume on the computer set high and then adjust the desired listening volume from that point on by the controls on the speakers? or should i set the volume on the speakers on high and adjust the desired listening volume up or down on the computer?

hard to tell which way sounds better, so perhaps it doesn't matter that much. just curious, thanks.

Generally, you'd set the computer high and the speakers low. Doing the opposite can introduce a lot of noise/hiss because you're amplifying a quiet signal (a lack of signal). Better to have a stronger signal from the source and use the speaker volume to limit it.

that's what i thought might be the case, same deal as when i plug my ipod into my stereo system. thanks much!

Hey Leo,

Was gonna ask you, did you pay much for your speakers? I am going to buy my dad a set for his birthday, but am a little off on that front, he doesnt need something that is production value, just something nice and clear that he can listen to 606 whilst in the kitchen.

hey alex...sorry i can't help you here, i got these for free from a friend. they are about 8 years old, 7 inches high x 4 inches wide with tone and volume controls. there isn't an actual model number on them, so couldn't even find a photo or spec online to share. that being said, they sound pretty good. certainly not an audiophile setup, but decent volume and depth/bass. i'd imagine they've only gotten better sounding in the past 8 years.

maybe others here can suggest good computer speakers...
