Cover versions that you prefer to the original

Heard it Through the Grapevine (though maybe not actually better than the original - which was by Martha Reeves I guess so you could in fact say Marvin Gaye's version surpasses the original)

Actually by Gladys Knight, though it's been pointed out yo me by one pedant before now that Marvin's version was recorded first but sat on the shelves til after the GK one was released. So you could say it's the original one.

What else? Aretha's Respect obviously, Roberta Flack's Compared to What, Patti Jo's Make Me Believe In You.

This is originally a Bee Gees song. I've never heard it, but there's no way it's as good as this.

@ Idlerich. Yeah it's a funny case that. The way they get the guitar to sound in the cover... I am ignorant of pretty much everything else they have recorded -which I understand are mostly covers? I'll def check that stones one out, ta.

Ken Boothe's version of Everything I Own is wicked, and the original (by Bread) is garbz.

we also need a thread of songs that no one knows are covers. for instance: You're my Venus.

Hangin' on the Telephone- no-one ever seems to realise about that.

WLAE - not a cover, but offered to Toni Basil before the Bangles.

The Nerves had 4 or 5 good songs. Prefer their original to Blondie.

Couple:

Only Will Oldham thing I like except for the Palace thing with "Come a little dog. Woof woof."

Of course, I'm never going to say that I prefer Jenkins', but I will say "Je sooz le grand zombie".

I guess I can't really take the piss out of Johnny for mispronunciation... don't understand half of that song!

I often mention it but I think I prefer the Cher version (with Gilded Splinters I mean).
Heres one where, for what it's worth, I think I prefer the cover. Can't imagine that it will cause a huge controversy cos I doubt anyone will have strong opinions either way.
