Vinyl dying (for DJ's)

I dunno, does noone else get the occasional rush of perspective when you try to imagine explaining to a musician forty years ago that playing other people's tunes is an exciting, dynamic, highly skilled artform if you play them from one medium, but lazy derivative hackery if you play them from another medium?

I would encourage the use if I thought it brought about better DJ'ing, better sound etc...so far all I've seen is pricks who think they're r/hawtin jerking they're elbows every 20 seconds whilst drowning the mix in that echo/delay effect. How the fuck is that better?

Went back University last year and turned out I was the first one ever to bring records to the 'dj soc'. Felt like something out of jurassic park, most of them didn't even use headphones. What harm though.

Agree with Slothrop to a point but also Theo Parrish in what value beyond convenience if it just mimicking the old stuff. That's why that EZ video was so great.

Might be silly question but how can you DJ without headphones?? (I mean technically, I'm not making a value judgement).

pretty much, guys dont even need to bring headphones, u look at the screen and make sure the bit where it analyses the track on soundwaves match up.. if it doesn't u press a button until it does, so no, no need for headphones if u know the tunes

if u wana just do ur thing @ home n sit back whilst traktor does it for you, (because really you just want to listen to a playlist of tunes you selected), then yea it's great init.

Right. Cheers.

I feel a bit like with this debate there are multiple audiences – if someone plays a banging set or well-judged music that sets off the party then 95% of the people there won’t care what the medium of the music is. The 5% may be into the craftsmanship angle and respect the fact that the DJ is beatmatching amazingly, and doing wicked sustained mixes. And that’s cool, all scenes have their cognoscenti, but it’s the same 5% who think ‘oh, is the normal mix of this track or that special dub mix with the slightly different bassline’.

People in the know will always invest more in the subtleties of a craft and more power to them, they drive the scene more than the regular punters in some ways (buying releases, giving praise, attending events) but they will always be a statistical minority.

Personally if a set sounds great and my mates are happy I’ll be loving it, although seeing some technical wizardry would be the icing on the cake….

@viktorvaughn yh pretty much. Most people don't give a f*ck really. Pretty mad that some DJ's also think that 128kpbs vinyl rips are acceptable to play out, but fuck itttt, convenience init!!!

Fart into to kaos pad if it works. Rather a hear a good set the a lovingly hand-reared vinyl one for the sake of it.

I just wonder about the DJ breakthroughs parallel to drum machines, samplers etc and now we have affordable studios but the DJing isn't keeping pace. I don't know if it's cause or symptom of the way it's been elbowed out to some degree.

probably fitting to post in here pre record store day.

did this one get posted a while back? - http://www.mixmag.net/words/news/wip-bans-traktor-from-future-events

spanish clubs banning use of traktor. "...we're fed up with the general laziness shown by 99% of 'artists' that we've seen and heard playing Traktor"

serato upped the levs innit by not allowing DJs to sync. first time i played on it after using virtual DJ + timecodes (+ sync) for a bit it blew my mind. felt so nice to mix vinyl style again.

i think all clubs should now have a serato box as standard - just like the obligatory pair of pioneers and technics (RIP 4 turntables in more and more clubs though...).

i also play some 128s. only because i have to cos that's what the artist / label sent me. really annoying.

they tend to bang hard enough on a big rig for ppl not to notice, even though they're flat as fuck IRL. funny thought really...

is it bad to have mismatched turntables? I'm planning on getting a technics sl-2 in a couple months for cheap but I'm thinking about getting something sooner than that. should i go for another sl-2?

@dert mine are mismatched, I don’t notice it particularly? It also makes me think that now I’m competent on two different technics models. (that’s probably wrong though)

On the vinyl subject I’ve just done a white label release if you’re into that kinda thing

Pioneer-CDJ-ZERO.jpg

New CDJ is free but walled gardened

-The unit is 100% free to successful applicants, depending on availability. A credit card must be supplied for purchase downloads.

-Download music directly from within the player. Other downloads and past purchases will be incompatible with the CDJ-Zero and will actually lock the unit if downloaded on it it. An unlock code will then have to be purchased directly from Pioneer.

-Burst Sync Mode. This feature sees the evolvement of the SYNC button, whereby the user can SYNC and then mix the next 6 tracks with the touch of one button, leaving the DJ free to dance on stage, crowdsurf, or chat to girls.

-Solar Powered Battery Function. Again to save on costs with the CDJ-Zero, Pioneer have left out the addition of a traditional battery or power supply, instead opting for a greener-option in the form of a solar powered energy pack. This also means the unit costs zero to run, however users may experience problems playing the unit in darkened rooms or at night time.

-Remote Recording. Every set played on the CDJ-Zero will be remotely recorded and uploaded directly into Pioneers new music store, whereby users can then purchase their own mixes to share them with friends.

Would be handy if you wanted one to compliment the decks (for free) but surely half the reason for going digital is playing unreleased stuff
