Nah man that's the right tempo.

This one is my favourite of his at the moment-

It is good; all the King Of The Playaz Ball album is. I am endeavouring to find out a lot about this era as opposed to enjoying a Lil Ugly Mane track and then finding out he's white & used to make witch house and then feeling cheated.

It really put me off him. I know it shouldn't but I have real issues with "authenticity" or whatever, no matter how misguided.

@slackk; Skinny is in fact still alive, and his skills are still top notch. I heard weird rumors that him, Infamous and Playa Fly were going to do a mixtape together. Which is basically all the best rappers of 3-6 reuniting, so that would be messianic.

I know what you(se) mean. Is there an issue of authenticity with SGPurrp too, given that he's basically ripping off a retro sound?

The thing I see about Purrrp is, he's always ripping off something. And I get why someone like Maritorialist would find that obnoxious, because he doesn't really make much his own. Unlike say, B, when he does something, he tends to ride the trick until it suffocates the life out of it. Like, Purrrp on Blackland is SO played out by the very end with his lazy flow.

For me, Purrrp is at his best when he's reworking things to fit his own vision, like "Captain Planet" or "Been Fweago".

Discovered Criminal Manne this morning. i might still be drunk but fucking hell these beats are just astonishing to me, intro especially

can't find the album anywhere though

im reading the big payback, its about about business in hip hop, by dan charnas. its a lot of the familar moments/records/labels being talked about, as youd expect, but its a pretty interesting look at the labels and business people behind it, rather than the artists, and a good reversal of the usual 'business people in music are evil' line. nothing about cash money from what ive read, and little about indie rap, but you cant cover everything. and he seems to have found lots of fresh little details and new insights. like, people never stop going on about how rick rubin signed PE and rush didnt, but he also makes the point that when they got harder and rap got more into black politics, rubin had basically left hip hop, and russell simmons was the one helping steer the group.

I liked that book, but it tried to discredit the notion that Master P didn't collect advances, which is a flat-out lie. They also totally ignore Rap-A-Lot and Sic-Wid-It. Which is some bull-shit...

Basically, it's a big chance to write about the insidious corporate hip-hop world, and leave the realm of independent hip-hop in the dust.

ive been skimming it, but yeah, the lack of stuff about southern labels is a bit weird. i wouldve liked it to go into less familiar stories - rap books are in danger of getting samey - but hes a great investigator.

really enjoying this mix of 93/4 memphis rap

anyone got links to anything along the same lines, or indeed any other regional mixtapes?

the 3-6 mafia thread had some links to old mixtapes associated with them but the links are long dead.

Chtonic Fatigue Syndrome
More memphis murk:
(Lo Key - On That Devil Shit)

Overlooked rap canon entry: Just Ice - Back to the Old School/Kool and Deadly
Personal favourite I'd include but wouldn't even try to defend: Lil Jon - Crunk Juice (Screwed and Chopped) AKA one of the heaviest records ever made.
