ASAP Yams (RNTumblr) on Trap, reminded me of what people are talking about in here:

“On top of that, he was the one that started the whole—I don’t want to say he started that, but he brought the whole trap music, he brought the whole trap reference to the spotlight. I think it kind of fucked it up, cause it’s like, people’s whole outlook on trap music is Young Jeezy over a Shawty Redd beat or Gucci Mane over a Zaytoven beat, and that’s not what trap music is. Trap music is like southern rap music that talks about the stuff about dopeboy shit, about hustling, you know what I’m saying? That’s what his second album, Trap Muzik, you feel me?

“That shit [techno trap remix DJs] I hope they all crawl up in a hole and die. Like the whole LA scene and shit needs to just die, please. That shit is just so insulting. All the records, I don’t care. All the trap beat days on soundcloud, they got to go. They’re really the worst. They took a music that was so beautiful and so great, and they just took that shit to hell. Trap is always going to be the trap, but that shit is just—they making a mockery of that shit.”

I was gonna post the remix cos it has Jeezy in it sporting a leather jacket and shades but its also got Chris Brown in it not sporting an axe wound to the throat so...

Another Bay area slap thing that slaps things.

I've been doing a bit of digging in the netz with an eye to compiling a 2012 list and both of these were bonus tracks on ''Kilt'' by Iamsu. ''Kilt'' has great production but I find him a bit insipid as a rapper - not unskilled, just bland. Maybe I'm wrongasfuck though.

What else? Oh, I FINALLY heard Tree - Sunday School and it as earned a place off the back of a couple of listens. More or less the freshest thing I've heard all year. I love his raspy ass voice.

''Reloaded'' is definitely on there too even though at this stage I find parts of it straight up boring, but tbh I found ''Marcberg'' snooze-worthy at first too and that grew on me like throwback mould.

Was thinking about putting Lil Ugly Mane on too cos its very entertaining but I've got all kinds of issues with caucasoidonal-trying-to-be-black self-hatred and also I've listened to it not even once in its entirety.

The Meek Mill album - I haven't given that a dog in hell's chance I listened to about a minute of it and decided he's annoying. I think I'd been ODing on rap at that point though.

@Corpsey; If you want to hear Iamsu! at his finest, I'd say go w/ the project he did w/ Jay Ant "Stoopid". The production from both those guys is incredible, and the rapping is much tighter, though still a bit transparent? The crisis of Wiz fandom...

Yeah I've got that on itunes I'll have to give it a listen

I get this horrible completist urge at this time of year and start ploughing through mixtapes like they're coursework.

Apparently the latest Curren$y mixtape is quite good - ''Priest Andretti''. Speaking of Wiz, I suppose.

I have been trying to resist the rap as coursework urge and just listen to shit as and when. There's a 30 song Gunplay comp put together by a french website that I started listening to after 601 Snort. I was kinda thinking I will never get through *30* Gunplay songs but it's surprisingly compelling. He's much better rapper than the persona might have you believe.

Roc Marciano is obviously a really great record, but I haven't fully digested it yet - feels like more of a late night listen than a wandering around on ipod thing. been He goes off at one point over CA Quintet "Trip Through Hell" which is a monster rare pysch private press. Inspired choice.

Right now this is ruling my world:

Curren$y & Harry Fraud Cigarette Boats

Yeah this is a good tape, they're a nice fit together. The one with Styles from earlier in the year (?) was also quite good. I still haven't listened to 'The Stoned Immaculate' for some reason.

Still enjoying ''Reloaded'', though it does have a couple of average tracks IMO. The highlights (''We Ill'', ''Emeralds'', ''Flash Gordan''...) make up for that though. He reminds me of loads of different NYC rappers - e.g. the opening lines to 'Emeralds' (I got Lamborghini dreams, Nissan nightmares, movin' white, my ice cool as the night air / Two fives flare glare through your Cartier eyewear, and knock ya newborn outta the high chair) remind me of Inspectah Deck cos of the dense multis/assonance but obviously without the high-energy delivery. His laid back angry delivery reminds me of Rakim, too, I dunno if I'm off with that one though. If you listen to his verses they don't really hang together, even line-by-line its pretty much a multisyllabic stream of images and boasts with the odd bit of wisdom thrown in - a bit like Action Bronson, I suppose. Anyway, at the high points it makes New York New York rap (that old throwback) sound cool again, if that doesn't sound like a completely twattish thing to say.

Funny you should say Bronson, 'cos I was gonna say the person he (Marciano) most reminds me of is Ghostface. All-over-the place image salad that somehow hangs together. I still haven't listened to it enough yet, as it's a very nightime album for me, and I normally get into my actual records late at night, rather than downloaded hip hop. I think it's doing something new with the NY sound which makes it fresh. Follows ithe Ka album in that regard.

as i said on another board, bronson is basically to ghostface what shyne or guerilla black were to biggie. good taste in beats but hes basically just a hollow impersonator.

He's just terrible, like... Forget Ghostface, him being white, he's just terrible.

He's never gotten better as a rapper, his technique is terrible, his lyrics are inane and useless. And how much longer are we going to put up with the "Yeah, I'll clap you..." garbage from a weekend warrior rapper who can just go back to cooking food for old greek families in Astoria afterwards once people get sick of the gimmicks, and the honestly really mediocre production, and the novelty of "YO, HE'S BRINGING THE REAL BACK...." ?

No shots at his fans here.

lol

i only began listening to him with dr. lecter admittedly, which was only a year or so ago, so maybe I can't comment on whether he's improved. but I do think that his storytelling on some of the tracks off blue chip is an improvement.

as far as whether he's 'real' goes. who the fuck cares any more? I thought that concept had been so thoroughly interrogated and dismantled that it's largely irrelevant. then again I'm a big rick ross fan.

some of the beats on blue chip and some off his latest tape are fucking cool. statik selektah's beats can get a bit boring I guess, but there were some bangers on that release too especially that hudmo sounding one cirque du soleil. liked that a lot.

I don't think his lyrics are inane but I can see where you're coming from. to me they're just snapshots of his personality. i think he's quite charismatic. lol.

he's not making anything lyrically groundbreaking (although I like the one producer per tape thing, not an innovation, but it's not done enough imo) but I enjoy listening to his music more than, say, oddisee's most recent album (which i thought had some fresh perspectives)
