Some of the Philly stuff like Swizzymack and Yung Phresh is much faster than the NJ and Baltimore stuff, and is completely insane.

thanks gonna check this out. Philly club is the real insane stuff. I'm tempted to start a thread just about DJ Swizzymack. He's signed up to Mad Decent now I think, crazily talented 17 year old. When Simon Reynolds was comparing Jersey club to gabba, he really meant Philly stuff like this


by all accounts this sound is huge with the teens in Philly.

Wanted to bump this as I've fallen off checking this forum regularly (how could I?!) & I have been well into this stuff the last year or so. I would agree Brick Bandits & Philly stuff specifically very good. In particular the aforementioned Sliink, Mike Gip & Jayhood. Mike Gip's Sister Nancy "Bam Bam" remix is the one that's really gone done very well on my net radio programme. You do have to sift a bit, as all of them, like the footworkers, do production for lame local rap groups as well, and after listening to hundreds of the tracks you feel like you've gone ten rounds with Tyson, but the good ones are really really good. Its kinda like a more straight-up version of footwork, which I must admit I sometiems still find so odd that it leaves me cold - this has all the energy, but you can tap yr foot to it!

Nice one for bumping phil, criminally overlooked in favour of Juke this stuff.

re: comparison to Juke, I think NJ club is often even odder than the chicago tracks. Love how the 'drop' in many club tracks is the whole track stripping down to just a gnarly kick drum/stuttery sample bouncing around the stereo field. And how so many of the pop/rnb/whatever remixes start off relatively straightforward then begin to progressively splinter into abstraction as the track goes on. But yeah, generally its much more danceable and fun than Juke (I like all the daft chants and producer tags plastered over everything) - real avant-dumb material!

After initially being blown away and making all these mixes, I found myself unable to keep up - like you say, listening to hundreds of these tracks (and there are hundreds, thousands of them given away on soundcloud constantly) can be wearing after a while. After sifting through a shitload of this stuff last year to make those mixes I kind of exhausted myself, though I do intend to come back to it soon. Last year I noticed a lot of the tracks becoming very trappy and/or EDM dubsteppy which turned me off a bit, but also to be expected with music as parasitic/cannibalistic as this - an example of this tendency is the mountain of Kanye West 'yeezus' remixes upped to soundcloud within days of it being released/leaked and no doubt this week there'll be a raft of Jay-Z ones. People like Sliink have talked about moving away from bootlegs and more towards 'original' productions and songs, but tbh I still prefer the quick knock-off tracks put on soundcloud to the more polished ones that have seen official release. It seems like the overwhelming majority of this music is made by very young teenagers which must have something to do with the raw energy.

The philly 'party' tracks (160 bpm gabba kick drum, siren-drenched cacophany) are often incredible but I couldn't listen to it for longer than 10 mins at a stretch - too much of a headfuck. Swizzymack seems to be the man for this style.

Phil, have you got any tips for any recent mixes so i can play a bit of catch-up?

Sadly not re recent mixes. I haven't even really listened to any mixes of it (how the hell do you even mix em?! They're all about 2 mins long!). I've just done the same as you suggested way upthread - hoovered up all the free individual track downloads on soundcloud & then given up a bit through exhaustion. As well as the producers themselves, there are a few people who specialise in putting good selections of NJ Club stuff up there, but I'd have to sift through all my soundcloud contacts to find em.

I was put onto NJ by the Simon Reynolds links, maybe early last year/v late the year before, where he was talking about the dancing (about as revelatory as 'cutting shapes'!), but after watching/reading some Sliink etc interviews, it seems to have been coming together for many years, with obvious evoloutionary friends in Miami Bass, juke, ghettotek, Bmore etc. I personally think its way more exciting than most Bmore I've heard (not that I'm an expert) just cos of the quickfire nature of it. I know what ya mean about the wackiness - can't say I've heard it in a club (where would you over here?), but I'm groovin' at home when the kicks come in & the panning starts (the No Sleep Til Brooklyn one is coming to mind)!

When I get a mo, I'll list out my favourites, but I think you covered most if not all of em above. I have played loads on the radio but there are a handful of UK-relevant ones I was concentrating on (reggae & garage remixes etc) that I thought might help spearhead a bit of interest - the aforementioned Sister Nancy & T2 remixes, "Put Cha Back In It" (based on MAW "Work"), the "Show Me Love" remix etc...

this Baltimore track that Night Slugs put out was pretty massive (already several years old before they put it out officially though)
and I like some of what Murder Mark does...but yeah I generally find the NJ stuff more interesting. Sounds great mixing it all together though!

as to how you mix it - I did my mixes in ableton. I think the tracks interact with each other in really interesting ways in the mix and I love how short and concise they are. They seem to work and through their own weird internal logic in 2 mins flat, then get the hell out of there, no messin'. Really enjoyed doing them. Many of the DJ mixes I've heard in the past have been mixed pretty badly, maybe NJ is a slightly less DJ focussed scene than Baltimore was (?) - i really have no idea though, I'm just another dilettante haha.

K Millz is a wicked producer too, definitely worth checking if you haven't already.

ever wondered where that squeaky bedspring sample thats in seemingly 75% of all club tracks comes from?

i guess it works pretty much like the amen break in jungle or the think break in Baltimore tracks. Endless variations on one tiny snatch of audio. Its incredible (and a testament to the scene's creativity in a way) that such a small sample can be reworked in so many different ways - and conversely its the kind of thing that ultimately puts many 'outsiders' to the scene off it too I suspect.

yeah i'm no night slugs fan really but have to admit they've been on the east coast club thing for a long time.

K millz mix video here. Its a year old and I think he's moved more into trap production since then but definitely worth a watch. I guess along with Sliink he's had the highest profile of the NJ producers. Still, its not enjoyed anywhere near the amount of critical attention as Juke has for whatever reason.
