Great headline.

Actually, 'Athenry' has all the great themes in it - resistance, morality...loads of reasons in the lyrics why it would be sung as a footie any them, not just cos it sounds great as a chorus.

Well finally Ronaldo and Nani are starting to connect across the attacking half... up till the last few possessions i would say that's been maybe one of the fundamental weaknesses of Portugal's offense. Ronaldo is constantly getting fed runs down the left wing, and he tends to like to square off against defenders as he is coming in toward net. He slows the game down, but to his credit he keeps finding openings... problem is the portuguese are almost never in the holes for i have no idea what reason.
Coentrao works pretty well with Ronaldo, but he's playing the same wing for the most part.
i'm really not very keen on Postiga.
all told though they've played quite well tonight. they've done quite well in the middle, managing to really limit the length and potency of the Dutch possessions in the second half. (as i wrote that last bit Van Der Vaart smacked the ball off the post... ha.)

I thought Portugal were very good. Nani had a great game, also Ronaldo. Who does this Mutinho play for, he looks pretty good?
Feel a bit sorry for the Danes, unlucky against Portugal and Germany but they go home with nothing... well, three points but you know what I mean.

Mick McCarthy describing the Czechs' breakaway goal vs Poland as 'parasite football'. God knows what he thought of Chelsea. Zombie bloodsucking soccer?

Denmark looked unlucky from the highlights - Bendtner had a definite penalty disallowed, and they hit the post - Germany were close to going out, and yet emerge with the only 100% record.

I had a bad feeling going into this one as I havent seen us play well in at least a year. Trapatonni is just far too negative and inflexible, plus he's phoning it in from Milan most of the time.

That's not to say we're a particularly good team, but we're better than the results suggest. We had pretty much the same team in Paris a couple of years back and managed to play with some heart and skill. Trapatonni has sucked all that out of us and needs to go asap, he's sticking with the same plan for tonights game against Italy FFS.

Obv, this was never going to happen, but worth a read. We did the exact opposite: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1219427-euro-2012-tactical-analysis-of-how-ireland-can-beat-spain

Some more sympathy for English fans now. Its not easy seeing your team implode at a major championship even if you didnt hold out much hope to begin with.

Fingers crossed we'll steal a draw tonight and Holland will be the new worst team :D.

If you do, the whole of Italy will be apoplectic, cos they should have a shot at winning this tournament.

Harry Redknapp has lost his mind - "Frankly, I wouldn't swap England's front six for any at this tournament – including Spain's."

That's typical Redknapp. The squads he inherits are hopeless, assembled by amateurs. The squads available to other managers are incredible, so any success they achieve is down to them, not the manager (in this case the man in a job he believes should be his).

Yeah, I dont think we will given that Trapatonni has fielded essentially the same team with the same formation again. Still, 0-0 not totally inconceivable.

i'm sure this is right, but he sounds so mental saying what he said in this case that he must be doing his job prospects some harm. That said, since when did (most) football clubs appoint on the basis of rationality...

LOL, Holland is such a disgrace. Rumours are saying Van der Wiel and Van Bommel had a fight earlier in the tournament and there's footage of Robben saying "Hou je bek man." at Van Marwijk when he asked him to fulfil his defending tasks better.

Phew - thought there was gonna be a nil-nil for a minute then.
Anyways, I think that (like Denmark) Croatia can consider themselves unlucky to be out, I thought they shaded it against Italy and they had slightly the better chances against Spain. That header really should have been a goal and it would have been very interesting if it had gone in.

Yeah, how on earth did Croatia miss that header? Spain's defence looks pretty shabby sometimes. Dare I say it, but with unfussy, direct tactics England could have a chance (presuming that's how group D turns out).

In the Ireland match - judging by the standards set by UEFA's reaction to Bendtner's indiscretion, Keith Andrews will probably be sentenced to execution tomorrow for kicking that ball away.

Do Spain really murder anyone (Ireland apart)? You're prob right that they'll win, but I think English physicality up front will trouble a Spanish defence which looks creaky and has really ridden its luck (the blatant penalty yday, the free header for Croatia, the mix-up that led to Balotelli having a one-on-one). It's possible.

If Portugal could recapture this form, the Euros would be theirs...
