while the melodic elements are obviously very prominent, they mostly just loop around with very little buildup or resolution of tension, while the beats are where the tune actually develops.

for me that's the frustrating thing really. the least compelling part of the music is the part that's developed the most. such a missed opportunity.

Yeah, I love the bassline on that tune but think the drums are a bit naff. So I pinched the former and did my own thing with it:

Cheesy's not bad in my book, but I suppose their merit varies with your proclivity for nostalgia. Not for me right now, maybe someday when I have a big emptiness inside me that I need introspective music to wallow about in.

whereas Aphex has compositions that stand out as beautiful in their own right, BoC is vibe music, would be great to put in movies to enhance a mood or something.
