Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

If you go with the 10"s then it's not much of a leap / change. It's a much less radicle concept than dance music on 7"s.

I hope to soon be reading about the new Bristol 10" 130 jukey / grimey scene on some hipster blog.

Yep, I'm pretty sold on the concept of pressing 7"s, and the fact that both producers and listeners would have to work around its limitations. No reason not to apply these ideas to 10"s I suppose.

One of these ideas, in some shape or form, coming to a blog / tumblr near you shortly. Probably decorated with pastel colours and triangles (OR MAYBE NOT.)

Where did you go for pressings of 10"s? I was trying to look for someone to do that a year or two back but gave up cos no-one would do it in the run size I wanted except at a totally ridiculous cost.

I think a big hole one with a tight middle is easier to cue isn't it? It won't wobble around the thingy as much as a small hole one.

Small hole is infinitely easier to mix with. Jukebox 7"s are mixable, but they're much more prone to slippage. You need a good centre and a lot of practice.

I think that if you have a good centre that fits tightly then a jukebox seven slips less than your average seven doesn't it?

Cheers for ten inch tips guys. The moment has gone for now but maybe will be useful in the future.

In theory, yes, in practice, if you touch the 7" at all theres a good chance of it slipping in the mix. You have to push or pull the centre instead.

Basically, you have to learn a whole bunch of new techniques when compared to 10/12" mixing - not just with dodgy JA pressings, but also with well pressed 7"s with proper centre holes. Overall its a much more delicate operation - though you do have more torque to play with.

Latest update - so the couple of plants I've spoken to today have strongly advised against the 7" bass heavy dance idea. Fine for reggae, shit for beatmixing appears to be the consensus so 10"s it is.

As for samples, still getting things together at the moment but once the remixes come in then I can start giving it a push.

I tend to lurk on here picking up tips for new music but If any of you from the great dissensus a&r hivemind can think of criminally underrated producers or tunes that really should have seen a vinyl pressing I'm definitely interested in having a listen.

aren't 10"s the most expensive of the lot? remember all the pressing houses I saw pricelists for had them at a fair bit more than 12"s - kinda depends on what you're going for, considering how few things actually come out on 10"s now though makes it quite an attractive selling point - just add the difference onto your selling price
