Guilty pleasures

I remember she had that one hit, that it was claimed had been written for her by some respectable music guy, but then it turned out it was just ripped off from some Turkish (?) pop hit.

To most of my friends, listening to obscure house and rattling techno is a guilty pleasure. The oppresive kick drum makes most them all shudder and they think my liking of it comes down to some odd eccentricity. If they caught wind i listen to power electronics they'd probably section me.

In the mean time i have to put on classics by kylie minogue and sophie ellis baxter to maintain a facade of normality at parties. Instead of skulking up to a bedroom by myself and listening to ben klock on my little headphones. When the moods right late 90's / early 00's r''n'b ala ashanti and nelly get me hot under the collar and make me blush.

I guess my real guilty pleasure, its something i picked up from my grandad, is a love for country music. Know nothing about it but there's something awfully timeless about it.

We would want to be hitting maroon five levels

I thought Coldplay was quite an admission. I mean come on - if k punk was still about, or even luka, I'd be hauled across the coals for that: and quite rightly too.

On the subject of Maroon 5 - I hate them, but I really like the song the bloke did with Kanye West. When I used to frequent american hip hop forums the people there all really rated maroon 5 and other shitty rock groups. Its like the fascination african americans have with Phil Collins. I wonder if this is a failure of taste or simply a bypassing of the guilt that white middle class people feel they 'SHOULD' feel if they enjoy him?

Mind you my eight year old self also liked fucking ''Wiggle Wiggle'' by the Outhere brothers which was just bloody ignorant.

I still have a soft spot for early 90s pop/dance, because that's when I started watching Top of the Pops and The Chart Show regularly. Especially 'Cotton Eye Joe' by Rednex

I get the feeling that yr average Dissensian would be most embarrassed by being caught enjoying EDM or jump-up dnb

I think its actually more that they'd be embarrassed caught listening to some self-consciously 'quality' drum n bass than jump up. Jump up is at least 'nuum music.

@Local Authority - (the best of )country music is fantastic, nothing guilty about it. I always groan inwardly when people trot out the usual 'I like all kinds of music, well except country' line - at least, I feel like I've heard it a 1000 times.

I really like me some MOR/American classic AM rock, despite logically finding it regrettably conservative. Just the fuzzy production gives me a glow inside. Any more recommendations beyond the obvious (Rumours etc) gratefully received, as I have no guidance at all on this kinda stuf:

Oh, and (upthread) 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia is indisputably classic. Although it was written by someone obscure first and then stolen, or something.
Edit: Ah sorry , Trillhouse referred to it at the top of the page. the Turkish ripoff was (prob the one you're thinking of, anyways) Holly Valance's Kiss Kiss, Natalie's was from some indie band:

Ahh shit. You're right on that one. I just remember hearing the original, late night in some kebab shop tv playing whatever the Turkish equivalent of MTV is. hazy.

I apologise to Imbruglia, and her fans, for defaming her in such an ill informed manor.

This was a bit of a party favourite for a while back when 80s shit wasn't done to death and before GTA picked it up.

I remember hearing it on holiday in Tunisia the year it came out, and doing a double take. By jove, Valance is a thief!

I don't feel guilty about any of my pleasures, and I will defend things I like to the edge of violence, but I do feel slightly embarrassed about liking the Amelie soundtrack so much.

We accept your apology.

Some uninteresting data: The original version of "Torn" was written by a band featuring Jeff Buckley's ex-Girlfriend on drums, who'd later end up also drumming in the band Autolux featuring one of the dudes from Failure. Buckley was also roommates with a guy in Fishbone, who supposedly stole one of Anthony Keidis' girlfriends. I'm a fucking encyclopedia of bullshit like that.

The thing with something like that is it's a big pop song lots of people like and others will assume a certain amount of irony. I don't think anyone on here would feel as guilty about liking James Blunt as they would say a High Focus tune.

good point. I feel more guilty about liking The 2 Bears than I do about a half-dozen Lenny Kravitz tracks.

That's a good point—the really bottom stuff is able to be safely appropriated because there's enough distance (this is what enables poptimism)

But acts like The Killers, despite being in theory primo targets for a poptimist redemption, have been totally ignored—they straddle things too much and it's not clear on what "level" you're taking them
