crazy beat, i wonder what barty would say about it. can you ask him luka?

i think the drum beat's not too unusual, but its his vocals that are throwing the whole rhythm off. very, very clever. like chris dave or tony williams.

Kanye West’s Fourth of July declaration, via Tweet, that he was running for president lit the internet on fire, even as pundits were trying to discern how serious he was. Over the course of four rambling hours of interviews on Tuesday, the billionaire rapper turned sneaker mogul revealed:
  • That he’s running for president in 2020 under a new banner—the Birthday Party—with guidance from Elon Musk and an obscure vice presidential candidate he’s already chosen. “Like anything I’ve ever done in my life,” says West, “I’m doing to win.”
  • That he no longer supports President Trump. “I am taking the red hat off, with this interview.”
  • That he’s ok with siphoning off Black votes from the Democratic nominee, thus helping Trump. “I’m not denying it, I just told you. To say that the Black vote is Democratic is a form of racism and white supremacy.”
  • That he’s never voted in his life.
  • That he was sick with Covid-19 in February.
  • That he’s suspicious of a coronavirus vaccine, terming vaccines “the mark of the beast.”
  • That he believes “Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work.”
  • That he envisions a White House organizational model based on the secret country of Wakanda in Black Panther.

i listened to ha! again and can't say i really like it, and also don't remember it. but yes the beat is pretty good, theres a nice grimy swooshy sound in there. i tried to help myself by watching the video but i'm not sure that was a good strategy. about halfway through, the chorus from 1:51, the whole song seems to fit and click into focus. maybe if i heard it everywhere i went for the summer, i would end up liking it. i dunno, some songs you do need that repeated exposure. like the first time i heard 'wearing my rolex' i really didn't like it, thought it was a total joke, couldn't quite believe what i was hearing, but it grew on me, then slowly it was everywhere and became tune of the summer. not that i listen to it much now. thats probably a bad example tbh. i can't think of another right now. so perhaps what kanye is doing is going for that immediacy, in the sparse big beats and slowish drawl? so you hook on the first listen? but there's less depth or detail, so repeated listens don't bear as much fruit. i dunno, perhaps this is a fruitless exploration.

brilliant interview with arthur jafa here

never intended to watch it all, but its just very good.

lots of stuff relevant to recent conversations here eg what he says about bill cosby: he's a great entertainer AND a rapist.

and what he says about speaking / not speaking to people. the intention of things.

he wants his own thread double quick

one thing i forgot to say is as rappers the reason the Kanye track doesn't work to me is he has such a weedy dynamic voice compared to Juvenile, Juve if you had no idea what he looked like has the voice of a old blues singer so as mentioned there's a depth there,Kanye as much as he's gotten better over the years as a rapper just sounds whiny and braying like a donkey

considering Kanye's zealot like focus on prison reform this is interesting to listen to right now

also the beat is great

Have you seen the Saturday night live clip of Kanye doing Ultralight beam? Arthur Jafa saw it and then decided to use it for his film. Kanye just looks very out of it, possessed I would say. Chance the rapper is good in it. It's on daily motion, pain in the ass

i haven't SNL is one of those american things that don't make sense to me but i did see him do new slaves and a bit of that song he did with Lil Pump
it does make sense that he would use it

Ye would probably make some dumb explanation sayin he was instilled with the spirit of the lord or whatever

at this point my feeling on Ultralight Beam is "it exists" not saying that i didn't think it was good(especially Chance the rapper's verse who i've never really liked like that) but just i dunno both of them like this really syrupy gospel rap with all the signifiers of "church" that doesn't appeal to me
