Hey all

'Scuse self-pimpin' but some of you might dig this. It's my VG+ mix, all 80s influenced stuff. Lots of discordant post-punk basslines and cold-hearted synths.

Can be found here:

It should be "Eighties" if I was being a real Crowley nerd - 'cos the correct letters are important for the numerology - ("Divide, add, multiply, and understand" (Liber Al vel Legis, chp 1., 25), but I wanted to flip it into a 80s music thing. I am slightly surprised at how much of the Crowley stuff I remember.

I just hope people like the mix (obvs this is predicated on people actually listening to it as well).

I'm 20 minutes in (on the one that sounds like the Jesus and Mary Chain) and I like it a lot.

If you'd told me it was all lost tracks from John Peel or something I would have believed you for the most part.

Is this a "thing" then or have you just stitched together tracks you like the sound of in an attempt to kickstart another eighties revival yourself? (Not complaining either way!).

It's weird (in good way) cos as far as I can recall you weren't into this sort of thing in the eighties?

Actually, sorry to be thick - some of this is actually from the 80s rather than "80s influenced" isn't it. Missing Brazillians, Holger Hiller and Lora Logic are all known to me...

I want to gently rib Dan for including what sounds for all the world like a Nouvelle Vague cover of 'Whip It', but I did this in person the other day. :p

P.S needs more Fad Gadget, but then so do most things.

I reckon you're allowed one wacky cover version per mix, but any more than that is a bit tacky.

Had quite a bit of Devo on recently as I found a greatest hits double CD in a charity shop... still amazing but not amazing enough to spend 25 quid on the "hardcore devo" sets that came out again in 2013....

actually a little boring but the first one i thought of. was also looking for the gothy electro covers by church of carbon (aka, patrick pulsinger/gerhard potuznik) of "bela lugosi's dead" and red lorry yellow lorry's "shout at the sky" but couldn't find them on youtube.

Jon: If I was making mixes of what I was into in the 80s, it would be Run DMC and The Fat Boys, with a side order of Loose Ends and Luther. I still like those records but have no desire to revisit. I'm a neophiliac, I think - part of the thrill of music is finding new things to be excited about and this stuff is all pretty new to me. (I don't get people who still collect what they were into 20 years ago) Also, a big part of the reason for buying a lot of this stuff is that you can still find it cheap! I'd love to be collecting psychfolk mad raers but that's not gonna happen unless I get hired by Goldman Sachs. There's not much on there over £20 - only one record I think, and most were considerably less.

I actually like that version of "Whip It" more than Devo's - I've always found them a bit wacky, in that annoying American Church of the Subgenius/Residents way - not that I've given them considered attention, to be fair. Glad you all liked it anyway! Please feel free to share and cross-pollinate. It's just north of 30 listens and I'd like to get a few more.

The problem is with both of those cover versions is that they are not that good, or don't add anything new. The Globo cover of "Whip It" puts an under-stated English vocal on top, which I like a lot also has some amazing synth moments. That B-52s cover is terrible (sorry Oliie) and the JG Thirlwell one doesn't add anything to something which is a stone cold classic. In fact, it even loses some of it's strengths - that icy-cold, electronic pulse.

Yeah I get all that, it's just funny people getting into it now afresh, for me. Also with you on going for whatever is affordable - one of the big advantages of having broad tastes.

Oh for sure it's terrible, I was just posting it in the spirit of wacky-covers-of-New-Wave-tunes. Although I guess the end point of that is the brief vogue 10-15 years ago for nu-metal bands to 'ironically' cover '80s pop classics. *shudder*

I quite like Grace's version:
