just preeing what DJs are playing and occasionally chancing new artists I haven't heard of before off grimeforum / thecoli / datpiff / hoodtapes etc.

Hot 97 is often still good btw

are there any (decent) semi-longform music download blogs still going?

"Boomkat shitting on Jamie XX was one of the best pieces of music crit I've seen lately"
Where is that then? I've never really seen much negative writing from them, just a load of stuff saying that every single release every week is undeniably the greatest piece of art of the last two millennia.

"not all boomkat write-ups are original content, probably at least half of them are a straight copy/paste of the record label's PR blurb (you can find lots of near-verbatim write-ups on forced exposure, phonica and juno sites, for example)."
Well you'd kinda guess that to be the case... except the boomkat hyperbole often goes far beyond what you'd imagine any press release to dare.
Also, boomkat are always pushing these kinda novelty things in sleeves made of hair or whatever - my friend was saying it reminds him of the comics industry a few years back when there were loads of limited edition gimmicks used to sell substandard products, in a few years there will be a load of people with a collection full of unlistenable records with sleeves handcarved from driftwood or music only available as a USB that is fitted into a cork in a bottle, wondering what the fuck they were thinking.

Where is that then?

Jamie xx practises safe raving with his debut solo album proper, following a 2011 collaboration with Gil Scott-Heron and production as part of The xx. 'In Colour' posits Jamie as the pre-eminent posh soul boy, lifting and massaging inspiration from the rich heritage of late '80s + early '90s London dance culture and channelling it into a pop-ready format palatable to Radio 1 daytime tastes and festival soundtracks. The putative "soul" of rare groove, boogie, hardcore and early jungle is sucked out and spliced with vocals in feathered arrangements ripened up for students and yummy mummys alike - all under one roof. From the deflated hardcore of 'Gosh' to the trudging 'Girl', it's as seductive as a Waitrose fridge on a warm day, infused with exotic tropical reference points in the steel drums of 'Obvs', mixing the suburban Breaks of latter-day Chicane and Marine Parade with woolly chords right out of a Lamb classic in 'Hold Tight', or nodding to seminal Joss Stone in 'Loud Places'. Oh, it's going to be a great summer, we can just feel it.

Blimey, I didn't know they had bad words on their keyboard. Though I reckon on a hot day a Waitrose fridge is bound to have some good stuff in it.

He's just got an autobiography out that guy... people are saying it's good. Then you should ask Lewis about him, I think they had a run-in or two - in fact JD offered him out I believe.

There isn't one round here unfortunately... I guess I'm just imagining a promised land of unobtainable food in there.

With older music I like to set up searches on ebay so that it picks out any record in any genre with a soundfile, that way you get sent hundreds of soundfiles every day and you can go through them all if you've got the energy. And buy or not depending on how much you like them.

this is kind of about habit isnt it? before, youd listen to one thing, or read one mag (or a few), etc etc, but now there are a zillion options to find out about new music and you can get them all for free/in seconds.
