Luka's fear of sullen crudeness is fascinating. I kinda want to explore this but it's not the place.

Patty, go for round 2

we were talking about this issue too and for us it is the sense of the sacred (i know we were denying that we were a corporate entity a couple of days ago but it's becoming harder to maintain the pretense.)

and i think that that too is bound up with attitudes towards the female (but go a level higher, before that bifurcation, and it become hermaphroditic)

we were talking about these bifurcation points too. what i was discussing with thirdform in the context of splits in scenes. at that point the light gets divided in two and both sides are only half-way true. you get the butterfly effect at those nodes. light entering and bifurcating.

another thing we were talking about was pieces of music that you feel literally levelled you up. taught your brain a new trick and made your entire listening experience more multidimensional. something clicks and you've unlocked the new level.

I guess that's why I've fallen into flooding the board w/ K-Pop atm. It's obviously an interest of mine and I enjoy it but also I know its a diffusive element that causes discomfort and irritation as an experience, more so than the rap or the metal/hardcore stuff in its way for people. I'm not necessarily interested in converting people to my taste, I'm interested in both the positive and negative reactions but watching them be explored. Ribbing on Third beside, I'd want him to explicitly attack the machinations of the weapons of the machine, not simply say "Well it's a gun" Fuck Yes it's a gun but take it apart, think about the craftstmanship, the aesthetics. Why does an AK-47 look like the Eye of Horus, that sort of thing? What is the psychology of the gun in your life that it manifested in this way, that this is the stealthy shit.

I'm saying all this and I guarantee someone's suggested a song that I ignored.

yeah, i see what you mean and i agree the recoil from that stuff is enormous.
there's a real horror there. the heart of darkness. what are we looking into?
what unconscious terrors is it activating? how? why?

barty do this one until youve worked out all its angles and trajectories and velocities. the sprung tension of it. the engineering.

reverb and sound of the drums- a cave and all the cultural connotations that go with it. plato, Muhammad, zarathustra. a sense of archetypal weight and grandeur. solitary. wet-sand coloured walls lit by firelight torches. visionaries. the burning bush.

the rhythm of the drums- slightly panicked. when you’re a bit overwhelmed. my bus is in 5 minutes and i can’t find my fucking keys!

there’s a faint sound of a sample in the background of the break- sounds like a memory. stumbling. an uncomfortable gulp. a seraphic whisper; just a snippet. the breath of the engineers.

rakim- it’s got the feeling of a little boy and role-playing as being a wrestler or something. it has no pretence to it; you really do feel like a wrestler, you forget you’re 6 years old you completely inhabit the fantasy. a little boy from south east london doing an american accent to be like someone from a film.

rakim’s flow- you know when you do an impression of a dumb person and you lean your head side to side with a nursery rhyme bounce? playful, silly, singing songs on the carpet in primary school.

rakim’s flow 2- at times it transcends that and it sounds like sheets or ice or tiny tectonic plates intersecting underneath one another. three of them.

the melody and sound of the guitar- adds to that sense of camp theatrics; sounds like a tacky tv serial from the past; adam wests batman or something.

the chicken squawk that first comes in at 0:26- speaking in tongues. a flash of an insignia. mania. exorcism. orgasm in a cheap, humid turkish hostel. hot candle wax on skin. bondage. an s&m club in the red room in twin peaks. sweaty brow. fever. a bad trip. animal sacrifice.

1:08- camp theatrics again.

there’s generally a charge to the whole thing. screw faced. determined. sureness and sturdiness of gait.

when i was deep deep in my dmt years me and my mate spent three years making
a film materialising my cosmic visions. it was so such heavy duty gear that it gave my mate a nervous breakdown. he couldn't bring himself to finish it. he got too scared by that point. i haven't seen him for almost a year now. he never leaves the house. bit bad really. it's one of the world's great lost works of art. it looks very, very similar to this video.

crowley this is your responsibility. talk to us.

the discomfort it causes us is obviously bound up in notions of innocence/childhood/sexuality - how we feel gatecrashing that world
and the implicit underbelly of what is presented visually/sonically.

but it needs unpacking.

Can turn naughty
The Micheal Bay-ness of it is just as bad. Ramming the message hard as possible every second. No moment left un hyped.

It's not so much a time barrier as it is a language barrier. I've never understood quite what Costello is for. The use value. What you do with it. I cant find any way in. Perhaps you can help?

What are the pleasures

Arrogance.

There's a great Costello quote "All my songs are about guilt and revenge".

i think the actual quote was more extreme - something like "the only emotions I know are guilt and revenge" ! or "the only emotions I'm capable of feeling... "

when he said that was circa his early mode / persona - This Year's Model / Armed Forces - when he's most trying to fit into punk (although deep down his roots are early 70s singer songwriters like Randy Newman and that kind of thing), so the spite and sneer levels are very high - and probably some amphetamines are in the system along with tons of alcohol

but then as you get onto Get Happy!, Trust, Imperial Bedroom, you get more glimpses of compassion and tenderness, alongside the caustic viewpoint

Luka, will get into a more thorough unwrapping later, right now i have to rush off to a celebration of Mark Fisher's work

i do agree though that there is something incomprehensible about Elvis Costello's work seen from today's vantage point - sort of, "why was this considered a good idea? what was it trying to achieve" - Costello was considered about as eminent and crucial a singer as there was at one point, but like with Springsteen (or Patti Smith) you have to a lot of historical reconstruction to get the context

that said, just as pure sound I find it invigorating and inventive

i am still wanting a second-by-second phenomenological deep-listen response from someone

The mask. Adele has a silly voice.
The silly voice is a caricature of a particular zone of affect.
