that Erik Prince one is particularly embarrassing it has to be said

then again, Harvard awarded Gulnara Karimova a masters degree

this is how the great entities of America's toothless liberal establishment operate

anyway yeah in one fell swoop we've managed to almost entirely undo what little progress had come of 17 years of (mostly Iraqi + Syrian) blood and treasure

to kill a guy

so, great

It’s a very transracial forum actually.

Luke striving to be black. Craner striving to be Jewish. Sufi the ottoman mystic. John Eden thinks he’s Levi roots. I’m clearly neoliberal garage DJ chucka umana. And Danny l joined the white helmets before any of us had ever heard of them.

views proposed in guest op-eds may be embarrassing in and of themselves, but they aren't endorsed by the times. in the case of the prince piece, it's more like one of their periodic exercises in "give them enough rope".

From Twitter:
Iran's respond on Solimani's assassination came through slaughtering and executing 24 Syrian southeastern Raqqa. These innocent people were herding sheep when Iranian militias raided and killed them as revenge to Qassem Solimani's death.

Saw some reports yesterday of Iraqis killed for blocking mock-funeral possessions for Soleimani.

Oz Katerji nailed it: "The world is a better place without him in it. It is also a less safe place" or words to that effect.

the world certainly is a better place without him, but it would have been better all around if he was taken out behind the scenes, maybe poisoned (like the Russian do) or assassinated by an inside double agent while he slept or something. Conspiracy theories would have invariably led to US involvement anyway but at least it probably wouldn't have made him the martyr that a drone missile attack does. but trump's too much of a blowhard, needed to make a show of it.

I'm glad I don't have Twitter anymore. I hate the emphasis on 'takes'. There's some good stuff on there, but it's all so smug. Everyone weighing in trying to position themselves as an authority and the voice of reason.

OTOH, there are some people who genuinely know what they're talking about.

A high chaff:wheat ratio, of course, same as any kind of media.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to when I said there's some good stuff on there. The format just lends itself to smug, pithy 'takes' and can make even the good stuff insufferable.

Oh yeah, soz, missed that bit.

Padraig: Just out of interest, what sources do you use for following events in Iran? I find it a fascinating country. Started for me with watching Iranian cinema which I still think has a claim to be the best in the world.

What did me about that was how she'd obviously not even bothered with 5m of googling. Just the shortest period of time would have put you in touch with his record.

I don't agree with the criticism here - what Rose McGowan said wasn't great, but lots of untraumatised people are saying things that are a lot worse. Plus, I think we can easily interpret her comments, or try to, in light of what's happened to her. It's not likely to actually be about Iran.

Fuck, we're all going to die. After reading that news late last night I was thinking about what it must have been like for those around at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis or the early 80s nuclear stand-off/crisis (I was around, but only a kid). Hard to imagine how that feels, and I really, really don't want to find out first hand.

Although now I'm reading about it, suggestion is that this could de-escalate matters. OK, good. But - Trump.

Spare me the taking everything literally. Thanks!

Also, given everything that has happened in the past five years, that kind of reaction is wearing quite thin. Clearly many political events have happened that most people never expected, and that would have been described as 'hysterical' paranoia previously. So whilst my statement was not meant to be taken literally, obvs, it is genuinely quite scary to see a narcissistic maniac in control of America and who it chooses to blow up.

Hmm, well OK, I'll let you off then - I'm just a bit tired of all these daft "WWIII" memes that are flying around (just as they did when Trump half-heartedly lobbed a few missiles at some evacuated Syrian air bases a couple of years ago, the long-term net result of which was absolutely nothing whatsoever).
