I made my best tag in this one.

Also, there were a bunch of other great threads going on around this time. Often they'd interweave with each other. Sometimes you'd forget which one you were in. My head was swimming with ideas about them when I was out and about irl. I think people were generally being nicer to each other back then too

I started out in this thread not being nice actually very aggravated cos everyone was being obstructive or just slow and dull witted but then I had a few nights on the mdma and took a different tack which took a lot of time patience and energy but ultimately worked pretty well. I went through the whole thread and acknowledged every post individually. Sometimes you need to give everyone a pat on the head or they just misbehave.

Is the switch from buttons to touchscreen dematerialisation or something else? In one sense you're removing an interface and being pulled further in, but it's still based around tactility so perhaps it's a step to the side rather than a step forward.

Speech recognition however...

The point I was making is that there you have a reduction in resistance and one of the primary trajectories of dematerialisation is this reduction in resistance, towards a frictionless world. You don't go to the product, the product comes to you, right to your front door. Do you see what I mean?

touchscreens are the physical manifestation of graphic interfaces

ghosts have become cultural staples during the dematerialised age.

the success of paranormal activity, hauntology, me and luke saying that the tommy lee sparta persona shifts/mumble rap ad lib jibberish are similar to channeling spirits, etc.

all of which reflects the fact that online communication is communication with discorporate sentience

the popularity of the ufc is counter-dematerialisation. the theatre of the visceral. audiences reviling in empathising with physical sensation.

We were talking about fight club on the matrix/ghostbusters thread. The real as pain violence deprivation suffering the ability to feel. The disappeared member of manic street preachers carving '4 Real' into his forearm with a razor blade during an NME interview.

This is of course part of what the catastrophe thread ia driving at. The desire to turn back, to reverse the direction of history. Year zero. The human spirit stripped of the accretions of civilization. Free again to starve and kill and suffer.

the popularity of beheading videos and fail (people falling over) videos.

isis/mexican drug cartel's theatre of brutality is feeding this cultural appetite for the physical and tangible.

Life as visceral struggle not the deadening vacuum of wage labour and the entertainment industry. The armchair and the television. The enclosed bubble of the motor car.

the pastoral inclination.

joe rogan's survivalism, i'm a celebrity get me out of here, etc.

mumble rap is very endemic of this. rejecting rap's historical affinity for urban areas while it embraces fourth world instrumentals, british folk revival instrumentals, creatures of folklore, etc.

But in turn this is linked to desensitisation whuch is why those teenagers could treat a drowning screaming child as entertainment. Everything is taking place on a screen. There is no emotional visceral bond. No attachment.

Poetix talked a little about this in relation to 4 chan and 8 chan. A systematic desensitisation as deconditioning, in order to immunise the self against emotional manipulation. The social engineering of the media. A drowned child on a beach to con you into supporting immigration.
