And we're talking even Gants Hill here. Essex had the venues.

There's still a few places in Gants Hill now, and much further out East/Essex that attract a kinda Page 3 Stunna/footballer crowd. I've always thought this was an echo of these earlier places.

The big venues were always absolutely tosh though - Palais/Fifth Avenue etc - unless you wanted to catch a shoeing. The Kings out in Seven Kings was a big soul venue though back in the day.

Were you writing Danny? I never knew that. I'll find Dtax's insta for you. There's some classic 90s pics pf PFB he keeps wheeling out

Best PFB name I ever heard was "Paddies Fighting Back". That Insta is great, cheers.

Yeah I went to those places in my teens. That's the basis of the Romford Dance thread.

Sounds good, what do they play?

No idea tbh. Probably nothing mentioned on this board.

Weird, thinking back. Don't think I was particularly happy so I have no desire to really revisit or revive the person I was then. Moving away as the great significator of identity change.

Essex throws up a lot of sparky, original people. A lot of very witty, quick people. Lot of nutters. Lot of Keith Flints.

Just thinking back on the graf thing, it kinda reminds me of teenage bullying, that was the vibe a lot of time. "Taxing", robbing paint (from shops and each other) low level violence etc. Lots of vandalistic fun as well of course but the emotional maturity you'd expect from a load of disaffected vandals. I remember how kind of out on his own one of my mates was, single parent who I never saw over several years of knocking around with him, always skint and stealing, school a distant memory. Always wearing the same wax jacket that fucking stunk. Last time I saw him he was a security guard. Hope his life prospects picked up.

I always thought some of this was to do with the East End diaspora heading out East post WW2 - Basildon, Rainham etc. It seems to have more working class associations that most other counties. The Essex girls gags kinda confirm that - to be a bit w/c = slags. Often wondered if this came from working class girls meeting city wankers at jobs around Liverpool Street.

I think the thing about east London is there was no real dominant ethnic bloc, which I think led to more mixing and less in group insularity but also everyone was dirt poor which acted as a leveller. You didn't have the disparities in wealth that you have in north London. Of course as Barty says everywhere is north London now, those days have gone.

(When I say everyone I mean everyone except me and my little sister)

in south you've got millwall racists, west indians, africans who are snobby against west indians and goldsmiths graduates. not a recipe for social cohesion or integration.

Herts man dem

I wouldn't claim any nuum contributions hailing from where I grew up - Berkhamsted / est Chilterns - but bits of Hertfordshire are essentially extensions of London, because of all the London people who got moved out there to populate the new towns like Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City. And then you have Hemel Hempstead which is essentially a new town grafted onto an old town, like a goiter that is bigger than the body it's attached to.

Then again Photek and Source Direct both went to private school in the St Albans area, I believe, and Adam F (lived in King's Langley at some point) is Alvin Stardust's son so grew up with money and music-biz connections. So perhaps the Home Counties in the true bourgeois sense did contribute a smidgeon.

Goldie moved out to quite near where I grew up, but only after he got rich and famous.

You're from Stockport aren't you? I suppose I just idly assume all British people come to London at every opportunity but maybe I was wrong.

Sorry to hear that mate. All can get a bit grim and mucky and distressing that mental stuff.

some of em 80s pirate radio characters were kids of lords and shit though, actually many of em come to think about it... I know Si's got an affection for the bourg but you gotta be careful unless you wanna be soulboy si in 2035.

*i would rate soulboy si* but the thing is in US he can't do the cigars, slippers, vintage wine armchair and log fire look whilst giving lectures. so he'll need to be dragged back to faragistan.
