Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
the potential misery if/when this truly breaks out in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh

or Sub-Saharan Africa

on top of whatever else people there may be dealing with

and very likely the countries that normally send aid will have their own problems (besides China, maybe, and even they can't help everything I'd think)

From what I've heard, the virus doesn't do well in warm temperatures, so hopefully tropical and sub-tropical countries will be spared the worst of it.

Re India, one other thing to mention as to why theres no pandemic there as yet, is that indians are used to having a bandh/curfew, cos theres always a lot of shit going down, like recently loads of muslims were killed in delhi. So a lot of regular people know the drill and may have respected it more than the west.

Did someone already say this? I think they did? That basically places with an already heavy, authoritarian state, can mobilise the public better than somewhere like the UK. this country its basically herding cats isnt it, every man and his dog on twitter sounding off, throwing their neighbours under the bus on a reg.

On the origin question- no conclusions but after years of research they think they traced SARS to a cave in Yunnan populated by horseshoe bats, transmitted to humans via civets as the intermediary carriers so...

Theory that covid-19 originated in the wet market in Wuhan is countered by some who hypothesise it could have been brought *into*the market, and first infection / Patient Zero back in Nov 2019

Well it's this disassociation thing isn't it. Like the luddites told us several centuries ago. We just can't help piling innovation on top of innovation til we don't know what a piece of fucking ham even is

The one to read on this is of course Weber rather than Marx. Weber is way better than Marx and predicted it proper. Marx was just some posh lad tooting his horn

Already hitting in Syria. Maybe the Russians targeting hospitals for bombing wasn't that great an idea.

I've read that too, but I don't think anyone knows that for sure yet

it hasn't truly exploded yet in any country with a largely tropical climate, but Malaysia and Brazil are both at hundreds of new cases/day

the rest of SE Asia at tens of new cases/day

they may just be further behind on the curve. we'll know more in 2-4 weeks.

the mayor of Bergamo admitted that the official COVID-19 death toll is low b/c people are dying untested

either at home or in nursing homes, which it is - to no one's surprise - devastating

if Italy can't get a handle on testing or death toll, I can't imagine impoverished countries are going to manage it

one thing that should work in developing countries favor is their much younger populations

countered by preexisting health conditions brought on by poverty, lack of access to water/medical resources, etc

too early to say, all in all

Interestingly, one if the best books about Naples is also a brilliant book about the effects and implications of epidemics:

Quarantine reading.

Cramer you might like the book about the flood in Naples, if you've not already read it. Can't remember what it's called but it was a guy who worked in the admin sector, and it's the imagining of a lot of rain or something, he uses it as a device to go into all these people's heads. Great book
