I've got a theory that version didn't actually write the 'awful man' tag but just pretended to in the ultimate act of self sacrifice, making himself a scapegoat to shield craner from a truth so terrible it would destroy him if he ever found out.

It's certainly a theory.

808 State, 'Pacific State'

Having said that, this kind of thing makes me feel patriotic, which is rare. What other country - even the U.S. - is good enough at pop music to make something like this and send it up the charts? I could probably choose some more obscure house or techno record in this spot, but what's the point? This is The Sublime. I think Gerald was still on board at this point, which makes sense as it clearly points towards the Bukem aesthetic. The second best thing that ever came out of Manchester.*

*'Voodoo Ray' was the best.

Gerald did a track later called "Specific Hate" - i think he was aggrieved that his creative contribution to "Pacific State" was not acknowledged.

Intense, 'Journey to the Unknown'
In the pantheon of greatest Dissensus posts ever

Brings me back instantly to my own life-changing moment; buying a copy of the Minor Threat discography when I was 12, based wholly on the cover and name, how a record can in that way encompass a whole life. To not know anything, the point where one begins discovering and choosing things for oneself, rather than having them told to you by adults. All the attendant history, good and bad, long lost friends and those that made it thru.

Started as a lark but this done got real, is what I mean. Thx, man.

Fonda Rae, 'Touch Me'

One of the great intros. I'm not really sure Cathy Dennis did this full justice.

A song about shagging, that sounds like it was beamed down from Venus.

This was on the soundtrack to The Nutty Professor!

Chaka Khan, I FEEL FUR YOU

This was scientifically proven to be greater that 'Ain't Nobody' during a very vigorous Dissensus debate, which I won.
