Some of the characters are quite different in the books. The Hound kinda fades out after the big battle with the ships but he was obviously popular on telly so they increased his role. The main difference for me is Cersei though - in the books she is a vicious scheming bitch but she's kinda shit at it and makes stupid decisions all the time. On telly she's much smarter and calmer sees more clearly is basically a more powerful character as a result.

In the books Ramsay tells Theon he's got something on his shoe and when Theon looks down there isn't anything.

Ramsey is an utter cunt on telly and in the books as far as I can see. His Dad is a bigger and scarier character in the books (and still alive if I remember correctly). Euron I think they got kinda wrong on the telly with him as this flamboyant cackling pirate who doesn't exactly exude menance. I've heard people compare him to Flashheart from Blackadder, I'm pretty sure that's not how he was envisioned by Martin.

Oh yeah, Theon's uncles are all nuts; apart from Euron you got the massive viking and the other one is this totally fanatical priest. But they're right when they talk about Qyburn who is toned way down - that's one of the most horrible bits when Cersei asks if Falyse is alive and he says something like "She is alive.... she is not entirely... comfortable perhaps".

Yeah Daenyris and Jon Snow aren't the best actors but they aren't the most entertaining characters either, they're fine for what they need to do. In fact Dany is kinda a psycho or at least a fascist.

Rewatching the middle few series, one thing that stands out is just how stupid Dani often is with her absolute moral inflexibility. There's one episode where her himbo fuckbuddy bloke catches one of the 'sons of the harpy' who are trying to sabotage her anti-slavery regime, and she refuses to have him killed, insisting that he be given a proper trial. Then one of the former slaves sneaks into the guy's cell and kills him, so what does she do? Has this guy summarily executed, in public, without a trial, to "send a message". Which promptly sparks off a riot. Nice one, dickhead.

Qyburn is great, isn't he? I guessed he's based at least in part on Josef Mengele. Properly creepy.

I've found Qybrun a bit of a nonentity on the show, which is a shame since Anton Lesser is one of the best actors in the cast.

Re: Dani's stupidity - I think this is more buyable in the books cos she's younger. That was one of the things that really struck me reading the first few books. They've cast actors in their twenties (maybe even thirties) who in the books are supposed to be teenagers.

Yeah, it's quite funny hearing the wildlings calling Jon Snow a "baby Crow" when Kit Harrington was 27 at the time.

I think he manages to get a bit of the creepiness in there actually, but I agree he doesn't have that much to work with

Random thought caused by watching it just now - how the fuck was Jacquen Hagar in jail when Arya met him? He seems to be completely invincible. It seems weird that some random guardsmen or soldiers somehow captured him or if they flukily did how did they stop him escaping?

By the way, does anyone read Viz? My girlfriend buys it as a reminder of England - their relentless piss take articles about GOT are very funny. The sheer number of articles is in itself a joke about the desperate articles proliferating in the real press as the final series approaches.

haven't been able to go outside this weekend without some people whining to me about game of thrones. i feel bad for feeling annoyed by it because everybody is just having fun right?

someone explained to me the storyline too and for me it's clear those guys with laser eyes that are put behind the wall will kill everybody in the end.

Yeah it must be fucking annoying if you don't watch it.

I'm fairly annoyed and I do watch it.

Still, it'll all be over soon.

My expectations are quite low for this season so hopefully I'll be easily impressed.

SPOILERS

Although it was solidly entertaining, on the whole I thought it was pretty bad.

The dialogue has taken a nosedive since they went off-book and the dragon-riding scene was like something out of a Disney movie.

What's most struck me about how GoT has declined is that once they ran out of books to plunder their TV-writing backgrounds have come to the fore. There's humour in it now that would fit into a Marvel Universe movie but take the air out of this pretty stern and serious world they've established.

Of course detractors of the show will say its always been cheesy/crap etc but they're objectively empirically wrong so shathut ya mout bumbaholes.

As I read the other day, since the narrative of the TV show overtook that of the books - which happened, what, halfway through season 6, or something? - it's essentially been fan-fic.
