Overheard conversations/monologues

This is definitely a thread I'd want to read... can't really contribute much though cos everyone I overhear is speaking foreign, albeit often with the odd English word bursting out.
One thing I will say (in response to what you said on the first page) is that I read that people thought that the internet was gonna destroy regional accents and ways of speaking in the UK but according to surveys since then that hasn't happened, in fact there are more regional accents than there used to be. I'm glad about that.

I only came across the concept of TED Talks a year ago, at a training day called 'Designing and Delivering Brilliant Presentations'.

I found the entire day dispiriting beyond belief, but I certainly wasn't very pleased to discover the existence of TED Talks.

I've been banging on about this shit for years craner you don't pay attention. Its tate modern. Its daunt books. Its the wellcome collection. Its waterstones smart thinking section. Its malcom gladwell. It's my takeaways from the conference. Its everywhere.

Sorry, that's true, it passed me by.

Have you ever been to Nazare, Rich?
Not yet. I have a friend (actually he's a bit of a dick) who comes from there and keeps inviting us to go there with him. You can surf just outside Lisbon though if that's what you're interested in, some decent waves at Caparica I understand, some dj we met from Australia was surfing there the other day.

Just wondering if you'd ever witnessed 100 ft waves smashing in. I guess it must be super busy there whenever they get a swell like that. You're in Lisbon, right?

I'm near Lisbon. Think that Nazare is like an hour's drive away (got a car now) so I will go when I get a chance, I really don't know how often they get those megawaves. I get it mixed up with Navarre which was a medieval kingdom right? On the edge of Spain I think.

You don’t seem interested in investigating Epstein beyond beyond his rampant sexual abuses. Look at his rampant nonconsensual brain experimentation — or does @fbi not want you to look there?

Liberals vehemently affirm the Idea of Progress while simultaneously denying the historically contingent character of their moral beliefs.

Liberalism is assuming that everyone is like you until they turn out to not be, at which point they are devils.

"Liberal bigotry is that wonderful state of mind in which one is compelled to call a bigot anyone who stands at odds with it, which is to say, it is bigotry made sublime. Or: the typical liberal is so great a bigot that he feels magnanimous as such." (Deogolwulf)

Liberal 'diversity' yet again quickly exposing itself as mere consumerism whereby ancient and profound cultures are reduced to products casually tossed into the same shopping trolly. The real message: cultures don't matter, the global economy matters.

It's not that *everything* is necessarily political. Rather, the liberal attempt to eliminate politics has has the predictable effect of politicising everything.

Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, but I feel more engaged to redouble my efforts against rising nationalism and illiberal values.

"The interesting thing about trying to set down dialogue realistically,'' he says, ''is that if you get it right it sounds stylized. Why is it so difficult to see clearly and to hear clearly? I don't know. But it is, and in 'Players' I listened very carefully to people around me. People in buses. People in the street. And in many parts of the book I used sentences that I heard literally, word for word. Yet it didn't sound as realistic as one might expect. It sounded over-refined even.''

When liberalism was a minority creed it strongly believed in secrecy and the fomenting of conspiracy. Now it enjoys hegemony it wants a fearful total transparency in order to achieve a yet more absolute domination.
