Me and Barty are taking corpsey to Leicester Square to watch The Joker with us. He's going to sit in the middle, holding the biggest popcorn which we are all going to share. There's going to be funny giggly moments when our hands collide having all reached out to grab some popcorn at the same time.

Hitler, Trotsky, Freud and Stalin were all living within a few miles of each other in Vienna at one point.

BTW, the studio marketing machine has apparently gone to great lengths to clarify that the name of the film is "Joker", NOT "The Joker". Please pay attention.

what a let down.
i did fall asleep mid way so maybe i missed a lot of good bits, but when i woke up, the film was finally getting into gear, or at least getting ready for a joke about short people.
phoenix is actualy a bit overrated (when you were here was just terrible, and as full of rehashed 70s vigilante crap as this), and often quite flat, lacking in the star charisma you need for a film like this, but he just seemed incredibly repetitive. that laugh alone just got very annoying fast. i get it was meant to be uncomfortable but it was wheeled out way too much. also how many shots do you need of his oddly shaped torso?
i liked how it looked (todd philips is obv thinking he wants to be a modern 'master' like QT or PTA), its paced like a film trying to announce its very adult, it had great songs, but as a whole it was just flat AF, repetitive AF, and actually quite boring. where was the edge? its just another leaden, self consciously slow paced, self serious, actually kind of smug, fun-less superhero movie like nolans batman movies, but worse. mainstream movies do 'edgy' very poorly these days.
cant really comment on the politics of it, as it seemed quite muddled, but its obv going for narcissistic nihilism, i just wasnt sure what about exactly. i might need to see it again and stay awake this time but i CBA really.
origin stories are generally shit though, and this doesnt break the rule.
michael moore seems to think its a movie for our times though, or maybe its that the film is so opaque and potentially about representing anything that you can project onto it whatever you like.

I liked Phoenix in Inherent Vice and The Master. The outtakes of him and Hoffman from the latter are good.

It's strange to see where he's ended up after first seeing him as Commodus in Gladiator. He never struck me as someone who'd become the kind of oddball leading man he has.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
I'm biased against this in advance cos the Hangover director did it.

Seeing it tonight though. Low expectations so it might be enjoyable.

White, krypto-right wing, male - the sucess stories of the late 2010s (Jordan Peterson, Trump, Joker)

RE: the audience, you won't see many/any representatives from trump's base there. regardless of what you think of the film, it has too many layers of emotion and issues. they're more into superficial "fast and furious" type shit. I know lots of hipsters who've seen it.

Darned cockwombles.
I watched half of the Dark Knight at the weekend, which I'd not seen before, despite being a Chris Nolan fan. Christ it was dull when Heath Ledger wasn't on screen.

Batman is pretty boring, as a character.

I dunno if I'm just being contrarian but Batman Vs Superman seemed VISUALLY much better than Nolan's movies.

Absolutely.

I've not seen that, but I was surprised at how visually uninspired DK seemed on the small screen. Maybe it worked at the cinema.
