As you know this is where we differ. Going all the way is easy. The tricky part is maintaining a useful tension. The tricky part is knowing exactly where the threshold is and NOT crossing it. walking the line.

I disagree, going all the way is harder because you have to use the edge of a neadle to prick out all the bits which will make it sound parody. like i don't really hugely enjoy the dnb that i posted upthread, but it's the same kind of frat bro intensity, just more masculinised. but frat sisters are just as shit as frat bros. it's not real moody.

there's getting drunk and being an evil cunt like ol dirty bastard, and then there's going beyond all the way and just succumbing to numbing fascist psycho-sexual forgetfulness and blackout.

it's not about coma it's about being a suicide machine, in control. I.E: voluntary surrender to the darkside. the pursuit of fear.

how can you like this stuff and hate jump up jungle from which it was descended? it's the same kind of pavlovian wait for the drop moronic thing you cuss out at an EDM show. trolling yourself, surely?

Scrillex is a chat room or game room name.

Scrillex has hacked into the school mainframe.

Scrillex has built a giant penis on Minecraft.

This is one of those "lenses" isn't it

Listening to scrillex through the lens of hypermodernity (including what's inspiring and depressing about that) makes it fascinating, like a brain scan.

I mean I think he's a talented producer but it's not claustrophobic and paranoid. that's the thing, the basslines only sound intense to us because we're listening on home speakers or in headphones. if you hear this stuff over a real system the basslines are so well defined and so cleanly eq'd that it ends up sounding like a rock guitar. everything pops out at you immediately. it's like dropping a stink bomb in the coridor at school. yeah it's like oh fuck/wow/haha for 30 seconds but then you're like oh, standard, asaan's let off another one, move on.

like once i was in corsica and someone was playing a fairly standard tech house set at 128 bpm and then a dj came on playing with maybe one or two bpm difference and immediately the techno started punching through harder with more friction. not because it was hard techno, but because the spatial dynamics are key. this stuff just does not work in a london club, you need those 40000 strong coachella stages. with the tech/electro house thing it's a ruthlessly metronomic (but not in the gabba sense) kick+clap+snare ppattern which is basically undanceable, but that's fine for those festival things where you are packed in like sardines and all you can do is vaguely jump around.

Scrillex isn't tapping into that aspect of modernity his music is like being gleefully in love with the internet, computer programmer more than drug fiend. Even the angry hard bits sound like 16 bit music.

But there's arguably an unintentional darkness in it all being so hollow. but maybe that's just a sort of music crit gymnastic manoeuvre

Btw Scrillex did a tune with Korn there's definitely nu metal links going on here isn't there? Cos this was to teenagers what nu metal was before it, as far as I could tell.

Except not cos it was so mainstream - didn't seem like the stuff only the "weird" kids would be into

sociology degree from the university of pitchfork yes. hate it when music critics are deep and think they have demystified the fetish when in fact they just say something banal they heard at the bar from their mates new line manager missus trying to flirt with your mates other mate who is fitter than your mate.

sonically anything can be mainstream now. What stops something from being mainstream-mania or popcult is intent and progression. skrillex gives it to you all at once and you hate it. post-dubstep gives it to you in such a rationed dose it's painful. it's about deep poison. just like jungle is a love affair. there is no way to fall in love with skrillex's music. there's no enigma. it' a fling. which is ironic when we talk about cancelling emotions. Skrillex is precisely an emotion bomb. like flings, they are wistful when they end but then you have to easily forget it lest you become too invested in the emotional toxin's stockholm matrix.

this one also some primo avant-brostep, bassline doesn't even have a dub bass correlate by this point, it's sheer machinegun bullets pinging off stalagtites.

the problem with revivals isn't that they happen, it's that the people who have read the nuum theory are so obsessed with ejaculating over the same 20 records that they have nowhere else left to go as they don't look into the gaps to accentuate the other tendancies that get discarded. so it's like surrogate sociology which is fucking wank. I need to get some synths and make some belgian revivalist dembow drumfunk gabba stuff i think

He's very a good showman Skrillex, genuinely entertaining good value for money as live experience. Not that i paid any money but if I had I would have felt that I got my money's worth. Giant videoscreens, a nice bit where he does this tune that he remixed by someone else, "You Are My Cinema" i think it's called, at any rate he flips the vidscreens around so that the audience can see themselves on these towering mirrors essentially, and all you can see is the upheld phones glittering. It's a nice moment, very stadium rock. This was quite a while ago, when I checked out a big EDM thing here in LA.

And he's an endearing presence, something very sweet about the way he engages with his fans. Well, he's from an emo background isn't he, so it's bound to be a more reciprocal 'we love you Denver' kind of thing innit. none of that too-cool indie / underground type vibe.

I went with my 12 yr old last year to an emo arena show, 21 Pilots - huge soulless sterile venue but they made it seem intimate. Phenomenal show actually - amazing production values, very hi-tech. But every single person in the 15 thousand audience (except for me) was singing along to every single word (and rapping along to the very prolix rap bits - they are sort of hybrid of emo, hip hop and a little bit of trance in there as well). it was really touching yet nothing to do with rock really. Something else.
