Yeah it's gooood, that choice of snare drum is telling me something. A glitzy reverb clap would have sent it flying, but they keep it down low.

I want to know more about this.

I've a sneaky regard for Travis Scott but otoh I think he's often the worst thing about his own tracks (vocally).

Pitchfork reviewer is no fan

JACKBOYS has been pegged as a “debut album” for the titular crew, but that is clearly an overstatement. There are two Don Toliver songs and one Sheck Wes song. There is one Luxury Tax 50 verse. Travis Scott fills out the tracklist with a 50-second instrumental and a remix to his recent hit single, “Highest in the Room,” with Rosalía and Lil Baby. JACKBOYS is a branding opportunity, pure and simple: From the Harmony Korine cover art to the promotional film shot as if A24 produced a Need For Speed sequel, it all seems like empty influencer bait. This is music as part of a merch bundle, about as necessary as a branded fire extinguisher.

"It's a branding opportunity"

Oh no, these songs about doing coke, fucking women and buying expensive cars lack emotional authenticity?!

Do they say anything about the music at all?

I mean I don't think this album is much cop myself tbh but not cos it's a "branding opportunity".

2020 the year dissensus goes to Astroworld? interesting development

Pop Smoke is alright but ever since Crowl described him as "NY Abracadabra" its hard for me to see him in any other way now

corpse what exactly is your regard for Travis Scott anyway? cause as far as ive noticed it feels like the only big contribution hes brought to rap is mosh pits otherwise i dont buy into this idea that hes some kind of auteur with a "singular vision" dude usually has 4/5 producers at one time making beats for him,he cant rap and also i think my big issue with his music is that it tries to do the Kanye thing of "curation" while at the same time being hype turn up music and the two dont go. Granted i feel like his music is too broad for my tastes i remember the one time i tried to listen to Rodeo the main thing i came away from it was thinking "its really big sounding but also really dumb"

Dude started out as B-tech Future and was out here stealing laptops now hes the biggest rapper out of Houston right now

Not going to fight his corner cos I reckon he's overrated and plagiarises etc. HOWEVER he has some good tunes and does sometimes reach a sort of psychedelic grandeur with his overblown caterwhauling.

Although if pressed to it I could only say I like that tune BUTTERFLY.

I'm interested in luka's opinion cos I bet he can mount a more convincing argument and usually his taste is bang on

I thought I didn't like Highest In The room, but it's actually quite pretty. I was put off by the title. Embarrassing. Like Red and Meth or something.

The guitar's pretty. His vocal tone's nice. Like those old slags who smoked too much and actually have a nice lower-mid range voice. its like that.

the spanish bird points to an annoying tendancy in travis. a post-kanye affinity for prog. "oh lets get a spanish bird on this rap song". its an awful muzo understanding of eclecticism. a tamil taxi driver once told me he was working with a jamaican guy on an indian reggae album.

I like lil baby's voice. really like it. it carries a lot of emotion in it. the tracy chapman of the 2010's i once called him. its croaking like its about to cry. its like splintered wood from slave ships. this isn't his best performance though.

a fine song. not good and not bad.

I never listen to this one. I cut it out of the album. Not that it's offensive I just think it's a better collection without it. Snip.
