the little silver box

i like the signature sound well enough but value it more for its tactile, morphing qualities. for me it's that approach to making music that acid tracks ushered in that's more important to carry forward, not so much the 303 itself. so newbuild is amazing but once you get to braindance people using it for classical melodies my appreciation fades.

non-acidic morph. not even remotely sounding like acid but in some senses a similar intensity, if not even more intense. give it a try

I think on some level I see 303 acid lines as being a comparable thing to loud fuzzy guitar riffs. Like, they rapidly reached a basically steady state from an evolutionary point of view, but they're still effective on such a basic level that we're probably going to keep doing them for as long as there's electricity.

mad innit. and there's still people out there making fresh sounding 303 based shit

yes apparently that's one of the very very very first uses of the 303 in pop - and used more or less as the manufacturers intended

you can really here its 303-ness during the coda at about 2.35

i know this is not the kind of head shredding stuff Third is looking for...

the word 'lubricious' was invented for Imagination / Leee Johns

i see your imagination and i raise you ambient acid from 1982

The first time I saw the little box in the silver flesh was inexpressibly thrilling - when i went down to Sevenoaks to interview Orbital at their home. They gave me a little demo of how it worked.

Features quite a bit on this tune of tunes

According to wiki, they bought it second hand "for £100 from a northern working men's club keyboard player who was living in London" and presumably was fairly befuddled by it

played this about 100 times when i first heard it. blew my head off. so simple but so effective, love how the acid line works like the gallopping rhythmic drop in 60s hard bop like hutcherson/henderson/blakey.

Orbital are a funny one. never quite got into them despite them touting their former punk credentials, but their music was pleasant enough that i can enjoy it in a mix or in the club. good old dad techno, is what i call it. that in itself is ok in small doses but listening to more than 10 minutes of it would be horrifying. probably the first mainstream act to de-ghettoise the sonics of the electronic music i like.

i'll admit, from my context-lacking perspective it's hard to understand what makes "chime" an anthem. when i listen to it i keep thinking, "ok, when's the part that makes it an anthem going to start?"

there's nothing but anthem in it - it's all anthem

sometimes i feel like my brain isn't quite wired right in terms of what i find catchy/not catchy, compared to most people. tbf.

i think it was maybe aphex who said this had the most impressive 303 programming ever?

haven't listened to everything in this thread yet but it has to be up there.
