You can actually see how the Repub tactics change as each bit of news appears... today the main thing is to insist that China is lying about the number of infected they have and so US isn't really number one. Of course it's a distraction from the fact that however many China has the US growth rate (and still no serious response that I see from on high) is fucking disastrous. Another line is "Well death rate is below Italy" or whatever "Shows how good our health system is" - maddening the way they swing into action on the message but do fuck all actual stuff behind it.

Apparently the G7 spiked a joint statement because the US demanded they refer to the virus as "Wuhan virus".

I imagine if German figures are true, it's a balance of all the important factors together - more nurses, more ICU staff, more beds, better healthcare, reasonable govt policy etc

This, from what I've been told, so people who need intubating are actually able to be intubated.

The amount of frustration I'm seeing being aired on social media by people of my generation towards their boomer parents who are steadfastly refusing to take any kind of lockdown remotely seriously makes me that an intentional "let the grannies die" approach is redundant at this point.

It's younger people with asthma, diabetes, ME and so on who I feel most sorry for. I've a friend who has a congenital heart condition and had a pacemaker fitted a few years ago. She said her parents are being totally blasé about the virus. "They don't mind dying. I do."

Really, that's interesting/frustrating. I haven't heard so much about that, but tbh more on Twitter than Facebook atm where there seem to be different conversations.

Big time. Your friend's parents sound like total morons. Much worse than that, actually.

Food security is such a major problem in the UK - for a rich country (with good growing conditions for many types of food, as far as I can tell?) to only produce 53% of its own food seems crazy. Obvs food security is due to many other factors, but this alone in combination with Brexit bodes very badly.

Yep. A lot of what I've read suggests that Brexit could spell the end of British farming, more or less. A huge part of the problem is that we buy most of our food from a handful of huge supermarket chains, whose combined purchasing power means that farmers get so little money for their produce that the only reason they can actually make a living is because of EU subsidies - with the result that an industry that uses 70% of the UK's land generates only 0.6% of its GDP. Take those away, or replace them with less generous subsidies from our own government, and an already precarious industry just collapses.

I don't know why more attention isn't being paid to this - and hasn't been paid to it, even before Brexit reared its ugly head. The CAP and the vast sums paid out of your and my taxes to landowners (who are often hugely wealthy aristocrats), in many cases just for owning land and not even using it, are one of the biggest legitimate criticisms of the EU, I think. And the Remain campaigns would have done well to be more honest about this.

Yeah, I don't believe it. Not till I see him denied a ventilator in favour of someone young and healthy with their whole life ahead of them.

23 people around bolsonaro have it. Id be amazed if he hasn't gotten it by now.

It doesn't count if they don't get put in ICU. In fact it makes it far worse. Easier for them to identify themselves as the strong, the ones who deserve to survive, Darwins Champions.

Yeah, if Bolsanaro did admit to catching it, but didn't get badly ill, he's exactly the sort who'd make a point of having "beaten" the disease by going for a brisk walk and knocking back a few whiskies.

Then it's a twofer: an advertisement of his natural masculine vigour, and a fuck-you to doctors/scientists/"experts". Populism is, as much as anything, about contempt for expertise and a reliance on "common sense", homespun wisdom, instinct, "gut feel" and so on.

As a side note when I was in the park I noticed people keeping apart, good, sensible, but letting strange dogs approach them. Now I hate dogs and instinct tells me that they can be carriers. This seems as good a time as any for a cull and a ban on ownership. Sheep Farmers and the blind excluded of course.
